A heartbreaking story of love, betrayal and financial sacrifice has emerged after a Kisumu woman, identified as Lilian Akinyi, opened up about her painful experience with a longtime partner she claims took advantage of her generosity before allegedly cheating on her with her own friend.

Speaking during an interview, Lilian recounted how she invested heavily in a relationship that lasted more than seven years, hoping to build a comfortable future with the man she loved. However, what she described as years of sacrifice and unwavering support allegedly ended in heartbreak after she discovered that her partner was involved with another woman.
According to Lilian, she carried almost the entire financial burden of their household throughout the relationship, with her partner contributing very little towards their daily expenses.
She revealed that her generosity went beyond paying household bills. At one point, she enrolled her partner in driving school, purchased a Nissan Tiida for him and later bought two motorbikes in an effort to help him establish a stable source of income.
But her financial support did not end there. Lilian said she also extended her generosity to her partner’s family, spending substantial amounts of money to construct a three-bedroom house for his mother in Kisumu.
The house reportedly included a perimeter fence, a gate and a toilet. She also purchased 50 chickens, two sheep and two goats to support the family.
Despite making such enormous sacrifices, Lilian claimed that her partner never reciprocated her financial efforts. She further alleged that he secretly used her phone to access Fuliza and borrow money without seeking her permission, leaving her feeling financially exploited.
One of the most painful memories she shared involved a Valentine’s Day getaway to Mombasa in February 2021.
Lilian recalled spending approximately KSh150,000 on a four-night holiday, hoping to create beautiful memories with her partner. During the trip, she even bought him flowers and asked him to surprise her by presenting them the following day.
However, according to her account, he refused, arguing that he could not give her flowers she had already purchased herself.
She added that throughout their more than seven years together, he had never bought her flowers or even a small gift, such as chocolate worth KSh200.
Her suspicions about his faithfulness reportedly began during the same holiday after another woman called him. Lilian later noticed a photograph of another woman on his phone before eventually coming across a message that she believed confirmed her fears.
When she confronted him, she claimed he broke down and apologised.
The situation reportedly became even more painful when her partner’s mother questioned why Lilian had spent so much money constructing a house for her instead of purchasing land for her own brother.
The remarks allegedly left Lilian questioning the sacrifices she had made for a family that she felt had not appreciated her efforts.
Following the disagreements and alleged betrayal, Lilian made the difficult decision to walk away from the relationship. She reportedly left Kisumu and returned to Nairobi with her daughter and just a suitcase, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
She later sold one of the motorbikes for KSh40,000, despite having purchased it for approximately KSh120,000.
Reflecting on her painful experience, Lilian urged women to safeguard their financial independence and avoid sacrificing their own dreams while trying to build their partners’ lives.
Her story has highlighted the difficult realities some people experience in relationships where financial support, love and commitment are not equally reciprocated.
While supporting a partner is not necessarily wrong, Lilian’s experience serves as a reminder that love should not require someone to abandon their own financial security, personal ambitions and future.
Sometimes, the greatest lesson comes from discovering that the person you spent years building up was never willing to build with you.
