A wave of grief has engulfed the Pwani University community following the heartbreaking death of a first-year student who reportedly drowned, cutting short his promising academic journey before he could fulfil his dreams.

The deceased has been identified as Victor Chemlati, a young undergraduate pursuing a degree in Mathematics at Pwani University in Kilifi County.
News of his untimely death has left fellow students, lecturers, family members and friends devastated, with many struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young man who had only recently embarked on his university education.
According to a report shared by Kahawa Tungu on X, Chemlati lost his life in a drowning incident. His death has sparked an outpouring of emotional tributes, with members of the university community taking to social media to express their sorrow and send messages of condolence to his grieving family.
A memorial poster shared alongside the report features a photograph of the young student dressed in a white jacket over a black T-shirt. Beautiful flowers and white doves appear in the background, accompanied by the touching message, “Fare Thee Well Comrade Victor Chemlati.”
The poster has become a painful reminder of a life that ended prematurely, leaving behind family members and friends who had hoped to see him graduate and achieve his ambitions.
Fellow students have described Chemlati as a humble, friendly and hardworking young man whose presence made a difference in the lives of those who interacted with him.
For many of his classmates, the tragedy is particularly difficult because they had expected to share several years of university experiences with him, including attending lectures, preparing for examinations, celebrating academic achievements and eventually graduating together.
Instead, they are now left with painful memories of a colleague whose university journey was tragically interrupted.
Chemlati was reportedly at the beginning of an important chapter in his life. Like many young people joining university, he had dreams of completing his studies, securing opportunities and building a better future for himself and his family.
His decision to pursue Mathematics represented an investment in his future, but sadly, he will not get the opportunity to see how far his academic ambitions could have taken him.
The tragedy has also brought attention to the pain experienced by families who lose their loved ones while they are still pursuing their education. For his relatives, the loss of a son and family member is undoubtedly difficult to comprehend.
Meanwhile, members of the Pwani University community have called for support and compassion towards the bereaved family as they navigate this painful period.
As tributes continue to emerge, Chemlati’s death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how unpredictable life can be. A young man who left home with hopes of pursuing higher education has now become the subject of farewell messages from those who wished to see him succeed.
