The name Pak Jin-hyok has become associated with some of the most notorious cyberattacks in modern history. The North Korean computer programmer was publicly identified and charged by United States authorities over his alleged involvement in a series of sophisticated hacking operations that targeted major corporations, international financial institutions and critical infrastructure.

From the devastating 2014 cyberattack on Sony Pictures to the shocking $81 million theft from Bangladesh’s central bank and the worldwide WannaCry ransomware outbreak, investigators have linked Pak to a state-sponsored hacking conspiracy that allegedly operated across international borders.
The case has attracted worldwide attention because it highlights how cybercrime has evolved into a powerful weapon capable of disrupting economies, exposing sensitive information and bringing essential services to a standstill.
The Sony Pictures Hack That Shook Hollywood
One of the most widely publicised incidents associated with Pak Jin-hyok was the 2014 cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The attack resulted in the theft and public release of confidential company emails, employee information, internal communications and unreleased films. The leaked material exposed sensitive conversations among Hollywood executives and caused significant embarrassment and financial disruption for the entertainment company.
The incident sent shockwaves through the film industry, demonstrating how vulnerable even powerful international corporations could be to sophisticated cybercriminals.
American investigators subsequently attributed the attack to North Korean-linked hackers.
The $81 Million Bangladesh Bank Heist
In 2016, another major cyber operation exposed serious weaknesses in the international banking system.
Hackers targeted Bangladesh Bank, exploiting weaknesses in its access to the SWIFT international financial messaging system to issue fraudulent transfer instructions.
The attackers attempted to move nearly $1 billion from the bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Although most of the transactions were stopped, approximately $81 million was successfully transferred to accounts in the Philippines.
The theft became one of the most notorious cyber-enabled bank robberies in history.
U.S. authorities later linked Pak Jin-hyok to the conspiracy behind the operation, accusing him of participating in a hacking campaign targeting financial institutions around the world.
WannaCry: The Ransomware Attack That Paralyzed the World
In May 2017, the world experienced another devastating cyber incident when WannaCry ransomware spread rapidly across computer networks in more than 150 countries.
The malicious software infected hundreds of thousands of computers, encrypting files and demanding ransom payments from victims who wanted to regain access to their information.
Among the most affected institutions was Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), where hospitals and healthcare facilities experienced major disruptions. Appointments were cancelled, medical services were interrupted and healthcare workers struggled to access essential computer systems.
Businesses and organisations across several continents were also affected.
U.S. investigators subsequently connected the WannaCry operation to North Korean hacking groups and included Pak Jin-hyok in their wider investigation.
