Emotions ran high in Ikonge, Nyamira County, on Thursday as mourners gathered to bid farewell to two children whose lives were tragically cut short during a roadside crusade.
The young victims, Precious Moraa Nyachiro and Maya Nyarinda Basweti, died on the spot after a matatu reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a crowd that had gathered for the religious event.
What began as a peaceful afternoon of prayers, singing and worship suddenly turned into a nightmare, leaving families devastated and an entire community mourning.
The two children were among residents who had gathered outside Tumaini Highway Hotel to attend and watch the open-air crusade. The atmosphere was reportedly filled with worship and community fellowship, with children standing alongside adults as the event unfolded.
Then, without warning, horror struck.
Witnesses reportedly watched helplessly as the matatu lost its course and moved towards the crowd.
Within seconds, screams replaced songs and prayers.
People scattered in panic, desperately trying to get out of the vehicle’s path. Others rushed towards the victims in a desperate attempt to save lives.
But for Amaya and Maya, there was no escape.
The two children suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, turning what had been a joyful religious gathering into a place of unimaginable grief.
Several other people were also injured in the crash and were rushed for medical attention.
Footage reportedly captured before and during the incident shows the gathering moments before chaos erupted, with the camera appearing to swing suddenly as people run in different directions following the impact.
A Community United in Grief
On Thursday, mourners gathered at Ikonge PAG Church for a common prayer service for the two children before their families proceeded with separate burial arrangements.
The shared prayers became an emotional moment as relatives, friends, church members and residents came together to remember the young lives that had been lost in a matter of seconds.
For the families, the pain is difficult to comprehend.
The children had left home to attend a gathering that was supposed to be peaceful. Instead, their families received the devastating news that they would never return.
The tragedy has also sparked renewed concerns over pedestrian safety in Ikonge, a busy trading centre where pedestrians, businesses and public transport operate in close proximity to busy roads.
Roadside religious gatherings, markets and other community activities can attract large crowds, sometimes leaving people dangerously close to moving vehicles.
Residents are now calling for greater caution and stronger measures to protect pedestrians in busy centres.
But beyond the road-safety concerns lies the unbearable reality faced by two families.
Amaya and Maya were children with lives ahead of them, dreams yet to be fulfilled and families who expected to see them return home.
Instead, their loved ones are preparing to lay them to rest.
A gathering that was meant to bring people together in faith has left an entire community united in sorrow.
Two innocent lives have been lost. Several others are nursing injuries. And families are left confronting a painful question that may never have an easy answer:
