The National Police Service (NPS) has paid glowing tribute to Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Mwenda Muriuki, celebrating his extraordinary journey as a Catholic priest, accomplished scholar and Superintendent of Police whose life has become a shining example of selfless service, leadership and unwavering faith.
Fr. Mwenda’s remarkable story is one of purpose, discipline and commitment to serving both God and the nation. His rare ability to balance the sacred calling of the priesthood with the demanding responsibilities of policing has earned him admiration across Kenya.
Born in Meru as the firstborn in a family of four children, Fr. Mwenda began pursuing his religious vocation in 1998 when he joined the Minor Seminary. Years of spiritual formation, academic study and personal dedication prepared him for the priesthood, culminating in his ordination as a deacon in April 2013 before he was ordained a Catholic priest in November of the same year.
As a priest, he faithfully served in several Catholic parishes across Meru, Embu, Nairobi and Mombasa, touching countless lives through preaching, counselling and pastoral care. He also served as chaplain at Chuka University and Kenyatta University, where he became a mentor and spiritual guide to many students navigating academic and personal challenges.
In 2017, Fr. Mwenda embraced another unique calling by joining the National Police Service. After successfully completing police training at the National Police College, he steadily rose through the ranks to become a Superintendent of Police and Principal Chaplain.
Within the police service, Fr. Mwenda has dedicated his work to providing spiritual guidance, emotional support and professional counselling to police officers and their families. His ministry has become a source of strength for officers facing the emotional and psychological pressures that often accompany law enforcement duties.
Determined to serve even more effectively, Fr. Mwenda pursued advanced qualifications in counselling psychology, executive management, servant leadership and child protection. These academic achievements have equipped him with the knowledge and skills needed to address the complex mental, emotional and spiritual challenges experienced by police officers while promoting resilience and well-being within the service.
The National Police Service has praised Fr. Mwenda for playing a key role in establishing the Catholic Chaplaincy within the service, creating a stronger support system for officers seeking spiritual care. His leadership has also inspired many officers to embrace the values of integrity, professionalism, compassion and ethical service.
