A Nairobi clothing trader is counting her blessings after a suspected phone theft was foiled at the last minute, thanks to her sharp instincts and a watchful eye.

The dramatic incident, which was captured on CCTV cameras, has sparked conversations among business owners after footage emerged showing a woman allegedly attempting to steal a mobile phone from a busy clothing shop while posing as an ordinary customer.
According to the shop owner, a Somali businesswoman, the day had started like any other. She welcomed several customers into her store, including a woman who arrived accompanied by her husband and other individuals. Nothing about the group initially raised suspicion.
As the trader attended to different shoppers, the woman appeared interested in the merchandise, browsing through clothes and even trying on several outfits. However, what seemed like a routine shopping trip allegedly concealed a more sinister plan.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the woman creating distractions by scattering clothing items around the shop and handing back garments she claimed she was no longer interested in purchasing. In the hustle and bustle of the business environment, her actions appeared completely normal.
Moments later, the woman allegedly spotted the shop owner’s mobile phone. The footage shows her carefully placing a piece of clothing over the device, seemingly attempting to hide it from view before making her move.
What she did not anticipate was the trader’s vigilance.
The shop owner quickly noticed the suspicious behavior and immediately intervened, preventing the phone from being taken. Her swift reaction turned what could have been a costly loss into a narrow escape.
Photos of the suspected thief have since surfaced online, with many traders praising the businesswoman for her alertness.
Following the incident, the trader issued a warning to fellow business owners, urging them to remain cautious when serving groups of customers. She noted that some criminals allegedly operate in teams, using distraction tactics to create opportunities for theft while blending in as genuine shoppers.
The incident has renewed concerns among Nairobi traders, many of whom say opportunistic theft disguised as ordinary shopping has become increasingly common. Business owners are now being encouraged to remain vigilant and closely monitor their premises, no matter how genuine a customer may appear.
