Man linked to 1.5billion equity bank theft killed after surviving different accident

Fresh questions have emerged following the mysterious death of businessman Joel Mwangi Wainaina, whose name had featured in investigations into an alleged Sh1.5 billion theft from Equity Bank.

Wainaina died on October 27, 2026, just seven days after surviving a horrific road accident in Ruiru, Kiambu County. His sudden death has raised eyebrows, particularly because he was facing serious financial crime allegations linked to the controversial acquisition of a major stake in Fanikisha Microfinance Bank.

His family is now reportedly questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, with suspicions that the accident that initially left him injured may not have been as straightforward as it appeared.

According to details contained in a police report, the incident occurred on October 20, 2026, when Wainaina had parked his vehicle in Ruiru town and briefly stepped away to attend to an errand.

When he returned, he discovered that one of his vehicle’s tyres had developed a puncture.

He reportedly contacted a mechanic to help him replace the damaged tyre, seemingly an ordinary roadside inconvenience that would later turn into a devastating tragedy.

As the two men worked on the vehicle, however, a lorry allegedly struck them before speeding away from the scene.

The impact proved fatal for the mechanic, who died at the scene. Wainaina, on the other hand, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital for emergency medical attention.

He received treatment and was subsequently discharged, giving his family hope that he would recover from the ordeal.

But that hope was short-lived.

A week after the accident, Wainaina reportedly collapsed at his home and died on October 27. His death has since attracted considerable attention because of the high-profile financial investigations in which he had been implicated.

### His connection to the Sh478 million microfinance deal

Before his death, Wainaina was facing allegations surrounding a controversial Sh478 million transaction involving the acquisition of a 49 per cent stake in Fanikisha Microfinance Bank.

Investigators reportedly suspected that the money used in the transaction could have originated from an alleged Sh1.5 billion theft from Equity Bank between May and July 2024.

Detectives were examining whether funds allegedly stolen from the commercial bank had been channelled through various transactions before being used to acquire shares in the microfinance institution.

Wainaina had been charged alongside Ruth Muthoni Kamau in a case involving allegations of attempted money laundering and an unlawful takeover of the financial institution.

Muthoni has denied the accusations, while the allegations against Wainaina remained subject to the ongoing court process.

The suspected connection between the two financial transactions had placed the businessman under scrutiny as detectives sought to establish how the money was obtained, transferred and eventually invested.

### Family suspects foul play

Wainaina’s death has now introduced another layer of mystery into an already complicated investigation.

His family reportedly suspects foul play and believes the October 20 road accident could have been deliberately orchestrated rather than being a routine traffic incident.

Their concerns have intensified following his unexpected collapse and death days after being discharged from hospital.

Ruiru Sub-county Police Commander Charles Kibathi confirmed that detectives were examining different theories surrounding the businessman’s death.

Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances that led to his death and determine whether there was any connection between the accident, his subsequent medical condition and the financial investigations he was facing.

For now, police have not established that the accident was connected to the alleged financial scandal.

The circumstances surrounding the lorry driver’s alleged hit-and-run, the mechanic’s death and Wainaina’s subsequent collapse remain important aspects that investigators will need to examine.

Was Wainaina’s death an unfortunate tragedy following a road accident, or was there something more sinister behind the events that unfolded in Ruiru?

That is the question detectives must answer as the mystery surrounding the businessman’s final days continues to deepen.
