Why Maseno school student shot himself dead in school and his identity

A quiet morning in Homa Bay County turned into a heartbreaking scene after a 17-year-old Form Four student at Maseno National School was found dead under tragic circumstances, leaving his family, fellow students, and the wider community struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.

The student’s lifeless body was discovered at around 4:00 a.m. on the basketball court inside Mawego National Polytechnic in Rachuonyo North. According to police, he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the left side of the head, with the bullet exiting through the right side, in an incident that investigators are currently treating as a suspected suicide.

The alarming discovery was made by a security officer attached to the institution, who immediately alerted authorities. Officers from Kendubay Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Rachuonyo North, quickly arrived at the scene to begin investigations and preserve crucial evidence.

As detectives combed through the area, they recovered a Ceska pistol lying beside the teenager’s body. The firearm was still loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition. Investigators also recovered a spent 9mm cartridge, believed to have been discharged during the incident, along with an Oppo mobile phone registered in the name of the student’s father.

Preliminary findings indicate that the recovered firearm belongs to the student’s father, who serves as the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Subwiga Police Station. According to investigators, the teenager is believed to have taken advantage of a brief moment when his father was taking a bath to sneak into his parents’ bedroom. It is alleged that he took the service pistol together with the mobile phone before quietly leaving the family home.

As detectives dug deeper into the circumstances leading to the tragedy, they established that the teenager had reportedly been involved in a disagreement with his parents after they confiscated his mobile phone. Investigators believe the dispute may have been one of the events preceding the fatal incident, although they caution that investigations are still ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached.

The shocking incident has left many residents of Homa Bay in disbelief, especially considering the student’s young age and promising academic future. Friends, classmates, and members of the community have expressed sorrow over the loss, with many calling for greater attention to the emotional and mental well-being of young people facing personal or family challenges.

Mental health experts have repeatedly emphasized that emotional distress among teenagers can sometimes go unnoticed, making it important for parents, teachers, and guardians to maintain open communication with young people and encourage them to seek help whenever they feel overwhelmed.

The student’s body was moved to Rachuonyo South Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, police have opened an inquest file as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to complete their work before drawing conclusions. They have also encouraged families to remain vigilant and foster supportive environments where young people feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking assistance during difficult moments.

The tragic death serves as a painful reminder of the importance of addressing emotional struggles among teenagers and ensuring that those facing personal difficulties receive timely support before situations escalate into irreversible tragedies. If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or overwhelming emotional distress, reaching out to a trusted family member, friend, counselor, or mental health professional can make a life-saving difference.
