A dramatic turn has emerged in the case involving Seventh-day Adventist singer Mary Clare, after Elvis Opiyo, the man accused of orchestrating the horrific acid attack that left the young woman with devastating injuries, was found dead in what is being treated as a suspected suicide
Opiyo’s death was reported on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, sending shockwaves through the religious community and reopening painful memories of the March attack that changed Clare’s life.
According to a source, Opiyo’s body is currently being held at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary in Nairobi. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and investigations are expected to establish what exactly happened.
The news of his death was also confirmed by Lamb Ministers, a fellow Christian ministry, in a statement shared on Facebook.
The organisation mourned Opiyo as “a brother in Christ and a co-labourer in the work of the Lord,” while sending condolences to Lighthouse Ministries, the organisation with which he was associated.
“Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we are comforted by the assurance that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord,” the ministry stated, adding that Opiyo had “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.”
At the time of his death, Opiyo was reportedly out on bail and living at his home in Umoja, Nairobi.
He had been facing serious allegations over the March 2026 attack on Clare. Investigators reportedly accused him of hiring another man to attack the singer by pouring acid on her.
The attack left Clare with severe burns and devastating injuries to her eyes. Her condition was reportedly so serious that she required specialist treatment in India in a desperate effort to restore her sight and help her recover from the injuries.
The case had attracted widespread attention, with Kenyans following Clare’s journey for justice and recovery.
According to reports surrounding the case, Opiyo was married and had two children but was allegedly involved in a relationship with Clare. The young singer reportedly attempted to end the relationship after learning that Opiyo was married.
However, allegations emerged that he refused to accept the breakup. The situation allegedly escalated before Clare was attacked in the horrifying incident that left her physically scarred and facing serious challenges with her eyesight.
Following the attack, former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko reportedly intervened after becoming aware of Clare’s plight. His intervention was followed by the arrest of Opiyo and the man suspected of carrying out the acid attack.
Sonko had also pledged to support Clare in her quest for justice and access to specialised medical care.
Now, with Opiyo’s sudden death, the case has taken another unexpected and tragic turn. Questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his death and what it could mean for the ongoing legal proceedings.
