A cloud of grief and unanswered questions hangs over the Mbungu family following the tragic and mysterious death of their beloved daughter and sister, Annah, in Nairob.
What was supposed to be a routine trip home turned into a heartbreaking nightmare that has left her family searching for answers and demanding justice.
According to her brother, Timothy Mbungu, Annah’s final moments remain shrouded in mystery. On the night she disappeared, she reportedly requested a taxi through a ride-hailing service at around 9:20 p.m. She was picked up shortly afterward, expecting nothing more than a safe journey home.
However, she never reached her destination.
Instead, tragedy struck just minutes later. Timothy revealed that police reportedly recovered Annah’s body at approximately 9:36 p.m., in an area far from where she was supposed to be heading. The devastating news shattered the family and marked the beginning of a painful quest for answers.
In an emotional tribute to his younger sister, Timothy expressed his heartbreak and guilt, saying he wished he had been there to protect her.
“I am mourning you, my little sister. Your big brother was not there to protect you. I never knew you had such powerful enemies. Looking at what happened, it seems you went through so much pain. Your only mistake was requesting a cab from a service you trusted,” he lamented.
The grieving brother questioned how a journey that began as an ordinary taxi ride could end so tragically.
“You requested a cab, but you never made it to your destination. To the company, you may just be data in a system, but to us, you were family. They left you lying lifeless by the roadside and continued with business as usual,” he said.
As the family struggles to come to terms with the loss, Timothy has also criticized authorities for what he describes as a slow and inadequate response to the incident. He claims that while some people view Annah’s death as just another news headline, to him she was a cherished sister whose life mattered.
“To some, she is just breaking news. To others, she is simply another body to be processed and forgotten. But to me, she was my sister. I may be weak against a complicated system, but I will do everything in my power to get justice. Ann, I must get answers. I love you too much to let this go,” he said.
Several troubling questions continue to haunt the family. Why did the taxi reportedly take a route different from the expected one? How did Annah allegedly end up being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in the middle of the road? Why were there no eyewitnesses, including the taxi driver? And why did investigators allegedly fail to gather critical information at the scene that could help unravel the mystery?
Adding to the family’s frustration is the claim that the taxi driver continued working the following day as though nothing had happened. Timothy alleges that it was only after pressure from concerned members of the public that police summoned the driver to Embakasi Police Station and impounded the vehicle for investigations.
“So many questions remain unanswered,” Timothy said.
As relatives, friends, and well-wishers mourn Annah’s untimely death, the family continues to call for a thorough investigation. They hope that uncovering the truth behind her final journey will not only bring justice for Annah but also help ensure the safety of others who rely on ride-hailing services every day.
