A quiet evening at a General Service Unit (GSU) compound in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, turned deadly when a 45-year-old nurse was allegedly shot six times following a confrontation reportedly linked to a love triangle.
The victim, identified as Doris Murei, was reportedly at the GSU Mess compound when she got into an argument with a police constable. According to preliminary reports, the confrontation escalated rapidly, ending with the nurse being fatally shot.
Doris, who was married, was reportedly taking alcohol at the time of the incident.
Police sources said she was allegedly in a relationship with Police Constable Nathan Kirwa, who is accused of confronting her after allegedly finding her drinking with another man at a bar within the camp.
What began as a confrontation reportedly turned violent, with Kirwa allegedly opening fire before fleeing the scene.
Doris was reportedly struck six times—five bullets hitting her in the back and another hitting her head. The severity of the injuries left her dead at the scene, sending shockwaves through the compound and leaving those who knew her struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.
Following the shooting, police launched a manhunt for the officer. He was later arrested, and a firearm believed to have been used in the incident was recovered as investigators moved to establish what exactly happened in the moments leading to the nurse’s death.
A team from the Uasin Gishu County Scene of Crime Management Unit, led by County Police Commander Wilborforce Sicharani, visited the scene and processed it for evidence.
Among the items recovered were seven spent 9mm cartridges, a Toyota Corolla 110 motor vehicle and a pistol holster. The items have been preserved as exhibits as detectives piece together the events surrounding the fatal shooting.
The deceased’s body was removed from the scene and transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
Authorities have launched investigations into the shooting, with detectives expected to establish the circumstances that preceded the confrontation, the relationship between the two individuals and what triggered the alleged use of the firearm.
The incident has also renewed attention on the growing concerns surrounding trauma and mental health challenges among police officers in Kenya.
Police officers routinely confront distressing and dangerous situations while carrying out their duties. They respond to violent crimes, accidents, domestic disputes and other emergencies, often while operating under intense pressure and putting their own lives at risk.
Over the years, authorities have expressed concern that accumulated trauma, stress and substance abuse among some officers may contribute to a worrying pattern of suicides and violent incidents involving members of the service.
In response, police authorities have strengthened counselling and mental-health support programmes for officers. The National Police Service Commission has also established a dedicated counselling unit tasked with addressing the psychological and emotional challenges facing members of the service.
The unit evaluates officers’ needs, develops intervention programmes and leads outreach initiatives aimed at preventing mental-health crises and substance abuse.
Officials have previously noted that police officers are often exposed to the most difficult aspects of community life. They are expected to maintain law and order in volatile situations, respond to emergencies and protect members of the public, sometimes at considerable personal risk.
As investigations into Doris Murei’s death continue, the recovery of the firearm and other exhibits is expected to help detectives reconstruct the fatal confrontation and determine the circumstances that culminated in the nurse’s death.
The postmortem examination is also expected to provide further information about the injuries sustained by the deceased as investigators continue pursuing answers in a case that has left the GSU community and residents of Eldoret shocked.
