Lilian Wanjiku’s heartbreaking story has touched thousands of Kenyans after a video of her struggling to carry a heavy gas cylinder through the streets of Naivasha went viral. The emotional footage left many asking the same painful question: How much longer can she keep fighting?

Behind the viral video is a story of extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and a mother’s determination to keep going despite living with a life-threatening heart condition.
The mother of five from Mai Mahiu, Naivasha, was born with a congenital heart condition. For years, she managed to live with the illness, raising her family and carrying on with life despite the challenges. But everything changed in 2024 after she gave birth to her fifth child.
What initially seemed like ordinary post-delivery complications soon turned into a medical emergency. Doctors recommended that Lilian undergo a specialized heart scan to determine the cause of her worsening health.
The results were devastating.
Medical specialists discovered an opening in her heart that had grown more dangerous over time. They explained that every pregnancy and every moment of labor had placed enormous strain on her heart, gradually worsening the condition.
By the time she became pregnant with her fifth child, the risk had become unbearable.
Doctors made the difficult decision to deliver the baby at just 24 weeks of pregnancy, fearing that continuing with the pregnancy could cost both Lilian and her unborn child their lives.
It was a race against time.
Against all odds, the premature baby survived, weighing only about 900 grams at birth. While the infant’s survival was nothing short of a miracle, the delivery left Lilian’s already fragile heart in an even weaker state.
The family was dealt another heartbreaking blow when doctors revealed that the baby had also inherited the same heart condition.
Today, Lilian depends on oxygen around the clock just to breathe. Simple daily activities have become exhausting, yet she continues to fight for the sake of her children.
Doctors have recommended heart surgery, but the procedure carries significant risks because of her deteriorating health. The fear of undergoing such a complex operation weighs heavily on her and her family.
Standing firmly beside her is her brother, David Waweru.
Despite being unemployed and raising four children of his own, David has devoted himself entirely to caring for his only sister. He says family is everything to him, and he refuses to abandon Lilian during the most difficult chapter of her life.
“I will continue standing with her no matter how hard it gets,” he says, determined to see her receive the treatment she desperately needs.
However, the financial burden has become overwhelming. Between oxygen therapy, medication, hospital visits, and the possibility of heart surgery, the family’s resources have been stretched beyond their limits.
As Lilian’s story continues to spread across social media, many Kenyans are expressing sympathy and hoping that compassionate well-wishers will come forward to help her access the specialized treatment that could save her life.
For Lilian, every day is another battle—but also another opportunity to fight for the future of her five children, who continue to look to their mother with hope despite the uncertainty surrounding her health.
