One ordinary drive home turned into a nightmare that shattered Jeffrey Olsen’s world in a matter of seconds. Nearly three decades later, the Utah father is opening up about the extraordinary experiences he says followed the tragic accident—moments he believes gave him the strength to keep living after losing the two people he loved most.
In 1997, Olsen, then 33, was driving his family home after visiting relatives of his wife, Tamara. During the journey, he reportedly dozed off behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off course. As he attempted to regain control, the car rolled several times before finally coming to a stop along the roadside.
The crash claimed the lives of Tamara and the couple’s 14-month-old son, Griffin, who both died at the scene. Their older son survived and was later found crying inside the wreckage.
For Olsen, however, the tragedy did not end there.
Years later, while speaking on the Afterlife Revealed podcast, he recounted what he described as two remarkable near-death experiences that occurred after the crash—events he says transformed his understanding of life, death, and grief.
According to Olsen, the first experience happened immediately after the accident.
He said he suddenly became aware that he was no longer confined to his physical body.
“It wasn’t in my brain, it was something bigger, something different,” he recalled. “I was very conscious outside of my body.”
Olsen described being surrounded by an overwhelming sense of light and peace. In that moment, he says he saw his wife again—but this time she appeared completely unharmed, free from the devastating injuries caused by the crash.
Rather than welcoming him to stay, he said Tamara urged him to return.
“Jeff, you can’t stay, you have to go, you can’t be here, you have to go back,” he remembered her saying.
The place he says he briefly experienced left an unforgettable impression on him.
“The only word that comes close to what I experienced was I was home,” Olsen said. “It felt so familiar.”
Still recovering in hospital weeks later, Olsen says he endured unimaginable emotional pain as he tried to come to terms with the deaths of his wife and young son.
It was during this difficult period that he says a second extraordinary experience occurred.
After finally managing to sleep on his side, Olsen recalled feeling as though he gently rose above his hospital bed into what he described as an indescribably beautiful place.
“There are words like heaven or the spirit world or the other side,” he explained, while acknowledging that no human language could fully capture what he experienced.
Long before tragedy struck, Olsen says his life had been relatively ordinary. Raised on a farm in Utah, he later earned a football scholarship to college before building a successful career in marketing and advertising.
Nothing in his earlier life, he says, prepared him for the devastating loss that followed the crash.
Despite enduring overwhelming grief, Olsen believes the experiences he described became a turning point in his healing journey.
He says they offered him hope during his darkest moments and gave him the courage to continue living for his surviving son.
Looking back, Olsen believes that without those deeply personal experiences, he may never have found the strength to recover from the heartbreaking loss of Tamara and Griffin.
