Man chains her sister in Dark room for being pregnant. Here is why

Residents of Mpape in Abuja have been left horrified after a 36-year-old woman was rescued from a tiny, dark room where she had allegedly been chained by her own brother for more than a year, in a disturbing ordeal that has sparked outrage and renewed calls for justice.

The victim, identified only as Grace, was rescued during a police operation after neighbours raised the alarm over suspicious sounds coming from a locked room inside the family compound. What officers discovered inside was heartbreaking.

Grace was found sitting on the cold floor in complete darkness, her frail legs secured with rusted chains. She appeared weak, malnourished, and surrounded by human waste, suggesting she had been living in degrading conditions for an extended period.

Police officers carefully spoke to her as they removed the chains, while videos recorded at the scene showed Grace slowly lifting her head toward the light after finally being freed from the room that had become her prison.

“The victim was found in a highly dehumanising condition. Nobody appeared to care about her welfare,” one of the responding officers said.

During questioning, Grace’s brother admitted that he had confined his sister but claimed she had only been restrained for one year and two months. He insisted that she had not been completely prevented from leaving.

According to him, Grace had previously left home and later returned pregnant, prompting the family to chain her and administer medication, claiming it was for her own well-being.

However, residents of the neighbourhood disputed his account, alleging that the siblings had once run a successful cement business together before a bitter disagreement over ownership and profits tore them apart.

Neighbours claimed that after the fallout, Grace’s brother allegedly began telling people that she was mentally unstable. They believe the claims were used to justify isolating her from the public before she was eventually locked away.

The shocking ordeal only came to light when a man fetching water near the property heard faint cries and unusual noises coming from the locked room. Sensing that something was terribly wrong, he alerted other residents, who quickly gathered at the scene.

When the door was finally forced open, those present were confronted with a heartbreaking sight. Grace was reportedly too weak to walk properly and appeared to have suffered both physically and emotionally from her prolonged confinement.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she is receiving urgent medical treatment as doctors assess her condition and begin the long process of her recovery.

The disturbing incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with many questioning how such abuse could have continued unnoticed for so long. Residents have also called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone responsible for Grace’s suffering is held accountable.

As investigations continue, the case has reignited conversations about the need to protect vulnerable individuals from abuse, even when the alleged perpetrators are members of their own families. Many hope Grace’s rescue marks the beginning of justice—and a chance for her to rebuild the life that was cruelly taken from her.
