Loving wife dies trying to save husband from electrocution

A cloud of sorrow has descended over a village in Kakamega County following a heartbreaking incident that claimed the lives of a husband and wife within moments of each other.

The tragic victims, identified as 48-year-old Charles Omulama, an employee of the Kakamega County Government, and his beloved wife, Elsa Andeso, died after coming into contact with live electrical wires at their homestead in an incident that has left relatives, neighbours, and the wider community devastated.

What began as an ordinary day quickly turned into a nightmare that no family could have imagined.

According to family members, Omulama had stepped outside his house to use the bathroom when he noticed loose electrical wires hanging dangerously near the entrance of the family compound. Concerned about the potential risk the wires posed to his family, he reportedly attempted to move or arrange them without knowing they were still carrying a powerful electrical current.

In a split second, disaster struck.

The live wires instantly electrocuted him, leaving him helpless and collapsing at the scene. Witnesses say the shock was so severe that he had no opportunity to call for help.

His wife, Elsa Andeso, who was nearby, witnessed the horrifying moment. Driven by instinct and desperation to save her husband, she rushed toward him without realizing the danger that still lurked around the area.

Sadly, the live current also caught her. The force of the electric shock violently threw her across the compound, where she landed near household items within the homestead.

Within moments, both husband and wife lay motionless.

The tragedy became even more heartbreaking because one of their children reportedly witnessed the entire incident unfold. Shocked and terrified, the child immediately sensed that something was terribly wrong and ran to seek help from nearby relatives.

According to family members, the child first discovered the mother lying motionless before rushing to alert the children’s grandmother and other relatives.

However, rescuing the couple proved impossible at first.

The electrical current was still active, creating a deadly danger zone around the victims. Relatives who rushed to the scene could only watch helplessly from a distance, fearing they too might become victims if they attempted a rescue.

Panic and confusion gripped the homestead as family members desperately searched for a solution.

It was only after an uncle managed to locate the main electricity switch and disconnect the power supply that relatives were finally able to approach the scene safely. Unfortunately, by then, it was too late. Both Omulama and Andeso had succumbed to the electric shock.

News of the double tragedy spread rapidly across Kakamega and beyond, triggering an outpouring of grief on social media. Friends, colleagues, and strangers alike expressed their condolences, with many describing the incident as one of the most heartbreaking family tragedies they had heard in recent times.

The deaths have also reignited concerns about electrical safety in residential areas. Many Kenyans are urging homeowners to avoid handling exposed or damaged electrical wiring on their own and instead seek assistance from qualified electricians or relevant authorities.

Others have called on power providers and local authorities to respond swiftly whenever dangerous electrical faults are reported, warning that delayed action can have fatal consequences.

As relatives prepare to lay the couple to rest, they are left grappling with an unimaginable loss. What makes the tragedy even more painful is that Omulama’s attempt to protect his family from danger ultimately cost him his life, while his wife lost hers trying to save the man she loved.

Their sudden deaths serve as a painful reminder of the hidden dangers electricity can pose and the importance of exercising extreme caution around exposed electrical installations.
