What was expected to be the arrival of four babies turned into an extraordinary family surprise when a Kiambu couple welcomed five newborns at once, bringing their total number of children to seven.
Mercy Kanini and her husband, Evans Nyamuhanga, are celebrating the remarkable arrival after Kanini delivered quintuplets through normal delivery at Thika County Referral Hospital.
The mother of the five newborns recalled the dramatic moments that unfolded when she arrived at the hospital, revealing that one of the babies had already begun making an appearance before doctors could fully assess her condition.
“When I got here, one of the babies was already coming out,” Kanini recalled.
She said she immediately called for a doctor, who came to examine her and initially considered preparing her for a caesarean section.
However, the situation changed after medical staff assessed her and determined that she could safely deliver all five babies without undergoing surgery.
What made the experience even more astonishing was that Kanini and her family had been expecting only four babies.
The fifth baby came as an unexpected surprise, turning what was already an extraordinary pregnancy into an even more remarkable story.
Yet despite the dramatic circumstances, Kanini said she was not overwhelmed by fear.
Instead, she described the moment as one filled with happiness and gratitude.
“I was not scared; I was very happy,” she said, while praising the nurses and doctors for the care they provided to her and her newborns.
For Kanini, the experience also marked another chapter in motherhood. The five babies are not her first children. She already has a firstborn and a second-born child, making the quintuplets her third delivery.
Her husband, meanwhile, is celebrating the blessing while openly acknowledging the enormous responsibility that now lies ahead.
Nyamuhanga said he had prepared himself mentally for four babies—but the arrival of a fifth child changed everything.
“This is a very difficult situation and at the same time a very happy moment for my family,” he said.
With seven children now depending on their parents, Nyamuhanga appealed to the county government and well-wishers to support the family as they begin this demanding new chapter.
He expressed gratitude after the county government arranged an ambulance for the family, describing the assistance as an important gesture.
But he stressed that more support would be needed to ensure the five newborns remain healthy, safe and adequately cared for as they grow.
The extraordinary birth has captured attention not only because of the sheer number of babies but also because of the unexpected circumstances surrounding their arrival.
For Kanini, however, the message is simple: five tiny lives have arrived, and with them comes a mixture of joy, responsibility, hope and a new chapter for a family that has suddenly grown from two children to seven.
