A heavy cloud of sorrow now hangs over Utumishi Girls Academy, as the community grapples with a fresh wave of tragedy following the deadly fire that tore through one of the school’s dormitories. What was already a night of terror became even more devastating when a parent, Gladys Chebet, lost her life in a horrific road accident while desperately rushing to check on her daughter.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by PM Njoroge, who revealed that Gladys and her husband had sped out of Nakuru late at night, immediately after receiving word of the unfolding disaster at the school. With panic tightening around their hearts and fear clouding their judgment, the couple embarked on the frantic journey toward Gilgil, praying that their daughter had somehow survived the blaze.
But fate dealt them a cruel blow.
Shortly after midnight, near the Diatomite stretch along the Nakuru–Gilgil highway, their vehicle collided with another in a grisly crash that shattered the night’s silence. Gladys Chebet died instantly—her life abruptly cut short in the very moment she was fighting to protect the one she loved most. Her husband sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, clinging to life even as the world he knew fell apart around him.
What makes the tragedy even more painful is that their daughter had survived the school fire. She emerged physically unharmed, but the emotional wound left behind—the loss of her mother on the very night she feared she might lose her own life—is something that will remain with her forever. She had escaped the flames, only to be engulfed by grief.
A parent who spoke to Paxson TV recounted witnessing the accident scene. His voice trembled as he described the chaos—twisted metal, shattered glass, and the stillness that follows unspeakable loss. He explained that Gladys and her husband had already arrived at the school, only to be told their daughter had been taken to the hospital for observation. Overwhelmed and terrified, they immediately set off again, unaware that danger awaited them just a few kilometers ahead.
“When we passed the scene in the early morning hours,” the parent recalled, “we didn’t even know at first who had been involved. But then we learnt it was parents—parents like us—who had just been here at the school. We were told their daughter was safe, only for them to meet such a tragedy on the way to the hospital. It broke our hearts.”
Several vehicles were involved in the collision—including a Prado, another personal car, and a cement truck—painting a grim picture of the force and scale of the accident.
Now, amid the ashes of the burnt dormitory and the tears of terrified students, another kind of grief settles in—a family shattered, a child left motherless, and a community forced to mourn a life lost in the line of love. What began as a night of fear became a night of irreversible heartbreak, one that will forever be remembered in Gilgil.
A mother died trying to reach her daughter.
A daughter lived, only to lose the woman who lived for her.
And that is the deepest tragedy of all.
