Form 3 student dies trying to separate two students fighting

A family in Dagoretti South is mourning the heartbreaking death of 17-year-old Alex Owegi Ariango, a Form Three student whose life was cut short months after he was stabbed while courageously trying to stop a fight between fellow students.

Alex, a class prefect at Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School, was attacked on April 3, 2026, after stepping in to separate two students who were engaged in a violent confrontation.

According to witnesses, what began as an attempt to restore peace quickly turned into a tragedy.

One of the students allegedly pulled out a knife that had been concealed from view and stabbed Alex twice in the stomach before fleeing the school compound.

The injuries were devastating, with the teenager reportedly suffering serious damage to vital internal organs, including his kidney and intestine.

Alex was eventually rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital by a Good Samaritan after his family reportedly faced delays in securing emergency assistance at the school.

Doctors immediately performed emergency surgery as they fought to save his life.

But what followed was a painful five-month battle.

The teenager remained under medical care as his condition continued to deteriorate. His family watched helplessly as medical expenses accumulated, forcing them to appeal for financial assistance while desperately trying to keep their son alive.

Despite extensive treatment and the efforts of medical professionals, the injuries sustained during the April attack eventually proved fatal.

Alex’s death has left his family, schoolmates and members of the community grappling with grief over a life that ended far too soon.

The case had already entered the criminal justice system following the stabbing.

Police officers from Kabete Police Station arrested the minor who was allegedly involved shortly after the incident. The suspect was initially charged with attempted murder while Alex remained hospitalized and continued receiving treatment.

The suspect was later released on cash bail.

However, Alex’s death is now expected to significantly change the course of the case. Following the teenager’s demise, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is expected to review the matter, with the attempted murder charge potentially being upgraded to murder.

For Alex’s loved ones, however, the legal proceedings cannot undo the loss of a young student who had stepped forward in an attempt to prevent violence.

His final act—intervening to stop a fight—has now become a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences that can follow acts of violence among students.

As the family prepares to lay Alex to rest, they are left mourning a teenager whose future was abruptly taken away after he chose to stand between two classmates and prevent a confrontation from escalating.
