The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled a new teacher licensing framework that will require educators in Kenya to renew their practising licences every five years. The renewal process will be linked to successful participation in a Continuous Professional Development programme aimed at enhancing teachers’ skills and knowledge.

Speaking at the 49th Annual Conference of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) held in Mombasa on 25 June, Acting TSC Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei explained that the initiative is designed to strengthen the quality of teaching and support the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.
Under the new arrangement, teachers will be expected to complete the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme before their licences can be renewed. The programme will focus on equipping educators with updated teaching strategies, professional ethics, and modern instructional approaches.
Mitei noted that most of the training sessions will be conducted through online platforms, allowing teachers from different parts of the country to participate conveniently. Only a few sessions will require physical attendance.
In a move expected to encourage participation, the Acting CEO assured teachers that the TPD programme will be offered at no cost. She emphasized that educators will not be required to pay any fees for the training, making professional growth more accessible to all teachers.
The new policy reflects TSC’s commitment to maintaining high professional standards in the teaching profession while ensuring that educators remain well-prepared to meet the evolving demands of Kenya’s education sector.
