A wave of grief and shock has swept through Sigowet Constituency in Kericho County after two teenage lovers who had been missing for several days were found dead in a sugarcane plantation.
The bodies of 18-year-old Victor Kipkoech Bett and 16-year-old Patricia Chepkoech were discovered in the Kong’eren, Kapsegut area, bringing a heartbreaking end to a desperate search that had kept their families and the local community on edge.
Victor was a Form Four student at Kisii Mosisa Secondary School, while Patricia was a Form Three student at Lelu Secondary School.
Their deaths have left their families devastated, with relatives and residents mourning two young people whose lives had been filled with dreams of completing their education and building a future.
The teenagers had reportedly been reported missing on Monday at Sokohuru Police Station after their families became increasingly concerned about their whereabouts.
Following the report, relatives, friends and police officers launched a search across the area and neighbouring locations, hoping that the two would be found safe.
Instead, the search ended in a horrifying discovery.
Days later, their bodies were found abandoned inside a sugarcane plantation in Kong’eren, Kapsegut.
Investigators believe the teenagers may have been subjected to severe violence before their bodies were dumped at the scene.
According to police, the victims were allegedly killed using a leso that was tied around their heads. Investigators further reported that a substance believed to be acid was used on the bodies before they were abandoned in the plantation.
Police suspect the substance may have been intended to conceal evidence and make it more difficult for investigators to establish what happened to the teenagers.
The gruesome discovery has intensified efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths, including where and when they were killed and what may have happened in the hours between their disappearance and the discovery of their bodies.
Police have since arrested three suspects believed to be connected to the killings.
The suspects are expected to undergo further interrogation as detectives piece together the events that preceded the murders and the subsequent disposal of the bodies.
Officers speaking at Soin Police Station said the investigation remains active and that detectives are pursuing leads that could shed light on the motive behind the killings.
For the families, however, the questions come too late.
Victor and Patricia had reportedly been looking ahead to their education and the lives they hoped to build after school. Their dreams have now been cut short, leaving their loved ones grappling with the painful reality of losing two teenagers under horrific circumstances.
As detectives continue their investigations, residents of Sigowet are left demanding answers over the deaths of the two young lovers—and justice for lives that ended far too soon.
