A family in Vihiga County has been plunged into unimaginable grief after a woman was brutally murdered in what police believe was a revenge attack linked to her daughter’s failed relationship.

The victim, identified as Ebby Mahugi, was stabbed to death multiple times during a horrifying midnight attack in the Chanzeywe area of Vihiga Sub-County. According to reports, Mahugi had stepped outside her house to use the toilet when a man believed to have been lying in wait suddenly emerged from the darkness and attacked her.
Her desperate screams shattered the silence of the night, waking family members who rushed outside, only to find her lying in a pool of blood. Despite their efforts to save her, she had already succumbed to her injuries at the scene after suffering several stab wounds to the chest.
Police have launched a manhunt for the main suspect, Nehemiah Oluyali, who is currently on the run. Investigators believe the killing may have been driven by revenge after his relationship with Mahugi’s daughter, Belinda Minayo, came to an end.
Speaking through tears, Belinda revealed that she and the suspect had been in a relationship and share a child together. However, after ending the relationship due to what she described as his disturbing behavior, he allegedly began issuing chilling threats against her and her family.
“My mother had advised me to leave him because of the way he behaved. He blamed her for our breakup and believed she had turned me against him,” Belinda said.
She recounted the terrifying moments leading to the attack, explaining that the family had fenced a small area outside the house that served as their bathroom during the night.
“My mother had gone there when he suddenly jumped over the fence and attacked her. She screamed loudly, and my younger sibling also started screaming. My father rushed outside and found her with five stab wounds on the chest,” she recalled.
Belinda further alleged that the suspect had repeatedly vowed to wipe out the entire family after she called off plans for their marriage. She claimed he had previously threatened revenge and had even acquired a five-litre jerrican of petrol, raising fears that he intended to carry out an even more devastating attack.
The brutal killing has left residents of Chanzeywe in shock, with many expressing concern over the growing number of domestic disputes that escalate into deadly violence. Neighbours described the family as peaceful and are struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss.
Police have appealed to members of the public to volunteer any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect, who remains at large. Investigations into the shocking murder are ongoing as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
