Residents of Tabora, Tanzania, have been left stunned by a shocking case of alleged family betrayal after a woman reportedly kidnapped her own Grade One niece and demanded a ransom from the child’s parents.

The incident, which has sparked outrage across the region, began on June 1 when the suspect allegedly walked into the young girl’s school and convinced teachers to release the child into her care. According to reports, the woman claimed to be Paulina’s older sister and told school officials that she needed to take the young girl for a passport photograph to facilitate the opening of a bank account in her name.
Trusting her explanation, the school allowed little Paulina to leave with her relative, unaware that the decision would trigger a 10-day nightmare for the child’s family.
When the girl failed to return home, panic quickly spread among family members. Desperate searches were launched, and worried relatives reported the disappearance to authorities. The family soon received chilling communications from unknown individuals demanding money in exchange for the child’s safe return.
Speaking during a public gathering on June 11, Tabora Regional Commissioner Paul Chacha revealed that police immediately began investigations after receiving the report. Their efforts eventually led to the arrest of the woman and her husband at a guest house where they were allegedly hiding with the child.
In a dramatic moment, Chacha presented the accused woman before residents, saying he wanted the public to see the person allegedly responsible for the crime.
“This is a very despicable act. How can you kidnap your own niece and demand a ransom from your brother?” Chacha asked. “We brought her here so that all of you can see who she is because our children are now fearful of even going to school.”
Authorities disclosed that the suspects allegedly used a newly registered phone number to contact the child’s parents and repeatedly switched the device on and off to avoid detection. Despite their efforts to evade authorities, investigators managed to track them down before they could access the ransom money.
According to officials, the woman claimed after her arrest that the plan had been suggested by her husband because they were facing severe financial difficulties. She reportedly admitted that they believed the ransom money would help them improve their lives and escape poverty.
Ironically, although the parents had reportedly sent the demanded money in hopes of rescuing their daughter, the suspects never got the opportunity to withdraw or spend it. Police moved swiftly and arrested them before they could access the funds.
After ten agonizing days, little Paulina was finally rescued and reunited with her emotional family members, bringing an end to a terrifying ordeal that had gripped the community.
The case has reignited discussions about child safety and the importance of schools thoroughly verifying the identity of individuals collecting children.
