Teacher dies hours after losing dear wife

A family trip that was supposed to be filled with joy and celebration has turned into an unimaginable tragedy after a teacher from Lugari lost his wife in a horrific road accident before dying from injuries sustained in the same crash hours later.

The heartbreaking incident occurred along the Timboroa stretch of the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway on Saturday morning, leaving six people dead and several others injured in one of the devastating road accidents to shock the region.

The teacher, identified as Otimo, reportedly succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital, hours after his wife, Christine, was killed at the scene of the accident.

Otimo was a dedicated educator who taught Physics, Mathematics and Computer Studies at Friends School Maturu. His death has left colleagues, students, friends and relatives devastated, particularly given the painful circumstances surrounding his final hours.

According to Wilson Olenja, a former colleague of the deceased at Lugari Boys, Otimo died in hospital after suffering organ failure following the injuries he sustained in the crash.

His wife, Christine, who was also a teacher at St. Mukasa Boys High School, reportedly died instantly at the scene, leaving behind a family whose journey had taken a tragic turn.

The accident also claimed the lives of several other passengers, including two female teachers who were reportedly travelling in the same vehicle.

Among the victims was Janet Watai, the headteacher of Chamavele Comprehensive School, and Sarah Ombachi, who served as the headteacher of Lumani Primary School in Matete, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.

Sarah’s daughter, who was a pupil at Kivaywa Primary School, also lost her life in the accident, adding another painful dimension to the tragedy.

Another victim was identified as Mama Memba, a businesswoman from Matete, while the matatu driver also died in the crash.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident happened when a North Rift Sacco Shuttle travelling from Eldoret towards Nakuru collided with a trailer transporting ballast. The impact was reportedly devastating, resulting in multiple fatalities and leaving survivors with serious injuries.

In another heartbreaking development, Otimo’s brother and his sister’s child survived the accident but remain in critical condition at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), where they are receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.

The family was reportedly travelling to Nairobi to attend Otimo’s sister’s wedding, an occasion that was expected to bring relatives together in celebration. Sadly, the journey ended in tragedy, with the family now facing the painful loss of loved ones instead of celebrating a wedding.

The deaths of Otimo and Christine have particularly touched many people because of the devastating sequence of events, with the teacher losing his wife before eventually succumbing to his own injuries.

Their colleagues in the education sector, friends and members of the Lugari community are now mourning the departed educators and other victims as the families come to terms with the devastating loss.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists and passengers on Kenyan highways, with calls for greater caution, responsible driving and improved road safety measures.

May the souls of all those who lost their lives rest in eternal peace, and may their families find strength during this difficult time.
