What started as an innocent Facebook friendship after high school would eventually become a life-changing nightmare for Mercy Mwende, a young woman from Londiani who is now serving a prison sentence that will keep her behind bars until 2037.

Speaking in an emotional interview with Simon Kibe on Jamba TV, Mercy recounted the shocking events that transformed her life from that of an ordinary young woman exploring social media into that of a convicted inmate.
According to Mercy, her journey began shortly after she completed her secondary school education. Like many young people eager to connect with the world, she was thrilled when she finally got her own mobile phone. Facebook quickly became her favorite platform, and it wasn’t long before a young man sent her a friendly message.
Their conversations became frequent. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The two exchanged messages regularly, learning more about each other and gradually developing what Mercy believed was a genuine romantic relationship.
“We talked often and became very close,” she recalled.
Despite communicating for a long time online, the two had never met in person. That opportunity finally came when Mercy and a female friend traveled to Elburgon for a photo shoot with friends. Upon learning that she was nearby, the young man suggested they meet.
The meeting seemed ordinary and pleasant. They spent time together, chatting and enjoying each other’s company. However, as evening approached, Mercy and her friend faced an unexpected problem—they could not find transportation back home.
Seeing their predicament, the young man offered them a place to spend the night and leave the following morning.
“We arrived at his house at night. It was a nice home, and everything seemed normal,” Mercy explained.
Her friend slept in one room while Mercy shared another room with the young man. Nothing appeared suspicious. The following morning, he woke up early, got dressed, and informed her that he was heading out to help his mother at her food business. He assured her he would call later.
Moments after he left, Mercy prepared to leave. But when she tried to open the door, she made a startling discovery—it had been locked from the outside.
Confused and trapped inside, she waited anxiously. Soon, she heard an elderly woman sweeping outside while calling out the young man’s name. Mercy responded and politely asked her to open the door.
What happened next would change her life forever.
As soon as the elderly woman opened the door and saw who was inside, she erupted into screams. The woman, who turned out to be the young man’s grandmother, began shouting for neighbors to come immediately.
Within minutes, curious residents flooded the compound.
Amid the commotion, Mercy learned a shocking truth she claims she never knew: the young man she had been communicating with on Facebook was actually a teenager still attending school.
Fear gripped her friend, who fled the scene as the situation spiraled out of control.
Police were called, and Mercy was arrested and taken to a local station. Later, the young man was brought in.
“I was shocked when I saw him wearing a school uniform,” she said. “I couldn’t believe he was still a student.”
Her friend was eventually arrested as well, and both women were charged with defilement.
After securing bond, Mercy’s family attempted to resolve the matter through discussions with the boy’s family. According to her, the teenager admitted he was the one who had initiated contact through Facebook.
Mercy says efforts were made to reach an agreement, but negotiations failed.
“We offered money, hoping the matter could be settled, but the demands kept increasing,” she explained. “When his grandmother eventually asked for KSh 300,000, our family simply could not afford it.”
The case proceeded through the courts, ending with a devastating verdict. Mercy was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Today, she remains behind bars, reflecting on the decisions and circumstances that altered her future.
“My sentence ends in 2037,” she said quietly.
Despite the setback, Mercy has not given up hope. She revealed that she is currently pursuing an appeal, hoping that a higher court will reconsider her case and possibly reduce or overturn her sentence.
As she waits for that opportunity, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the risks that can accompany online relationships and the importance of verifying who people truly are before meeting them in person.
