What began as an ordinary night of music and entertainment at a popular nightclub in Kitengela quickly turned into a dramatic confrontation after a woman walked into the venue accompanied by her young son, leaving revellers stunned and igniting a fierce debate both inside the club and across social media.
A video that has since gone viral captures the tense moment patrons questioned why a child was inside an establishment primarily meant for adults. As the music played in the background, several clubgoers confronted the woman, urging her to take the boy home and insisting that a nightclub was no place for a minor, regardless of the circumstances.
However, the mother stood her ground and refused to leave.
She argued that her son was not consuming alcohol or causing any disturbance and challenged those criticizing her to explain exactly what law she had broken. To reinforce her argument, she called the young boy over, showing everyone that he was calmly holding nothing more than a lollipop.
Ironically, while emotions ran high among the adults, the child appeared completely unfazed by the commotion surrounding him. Wrapped warmly in a jacket, he quietly enjoyed his lollipop, seemingly unaware that he had become the centre of a heated public dispute.
Despite her defence, many revellers insisted their concern had nothing to do with whether the child was drinking. Instead, they argued that nightclubs are adult environments characterized by loud music, intoxicated patrons, cigarette smoke, and late-night activities that are unsuitable for children.
Rather than backing down, the woman dismissed the criticism and told those confronting her to mind their own business. She further claimed that her son had been with her at the nightclub for most of the day, a statement that only intensified the outrage among those present.
The video has since spread rapidly across social media platforms, dividing public opinion.
Many Kenyans criticized the mother’s decision, arguing that parents have a duty to protect children from environments that may negatively influence or expose them to adult behaviour. Others questioned how the child was allowed into the establishment in the first place, calling on entertainment venues to enforce stricter measures to prevent minors from accessing adult-only spaces.
On the other hand, some social media users felt the confrontation could have been handled more calmly and respectfully. They argued that publicly shaming the woman only escalated the situation and that concerns about the child’s welfare could have been addressed without creating a spectacle.
