A family in Limuru, Kiambu County, has been plunged into fresh mourning after a woman who lost her husband and three children in a horrific road accident died months after the tragedy.
Felista Njeri had been struggling to pick up the pieces of her life after the devastating crash claimed the lives of her husband, Frank Muturi, their three children and two brothers-in-law.
Now, in a cruel turn of events, the family is mourning Njeri herself, reopening wounds that had barely begun to heal.
The circumstances surrounding her death have not yet been made public.
Njeri had been left to face an unimaginable reality after the crash along the Mai Mahiu–Naivasha Highway. In a single night, she lost the people who formed the centre of her world.
Her three children — Fidelis Waithera, 15, Catherine Wanjiru, 13, and Vitalis James Kirubi, 7 — were among those who died in the accident.
Overwhelmed by grief at the time, Njeri struggled to understand how she could continue living after losing her entire immediate family.
“I have been left without a single child. They have all died. All three of them. The husband I loved is no more. I have been left empty, and I feel completely devastated,” she said in anguish.
Her husband, Muturi, was a well-known Limuru businessman who operated a chain of butcheries. He was travelling with family members when the Toyota Prado they were in collided head-on with a truck near High Peak in Naivasha.
The collision was catastrophic.
Six members of the extended family, together with the young child of their family maid, died at the scene. The group was reportedly travelling after attending a burial planning meeting when tragedy struck.
For Njeri, the crash represented far more than the loss of loved ones. It destroyed the family she had built and left her facing a future she had never imagined.
She remembered her husband as a hardworking and loving man who had devoted himself to providing for his family.
“Muturi was a good man. He loved his family and worked hard to ensure we had a good life. He took care of his mother with so much love. Now he is gone, and I don’t know how we will move on from this,” she lamented.
In the months that followed, friends, relatives and neighbours rallied around Njeri, offering comfort as she attempted to navigate life after the devastating loss.
But her latest death has left those who stood beside her devastated once again.
Relatives and members of the community have returned to the family home, this time to mourn the woman who had herself become a symbol of resilience after surviving one of the most painful tragedies a family could endure.
