A dark cloud of grief and shock has descended on Kong’onge Village in Rachuonyo West Sub-county, Homa Bay County, following a heartbreaking family tragedy that has left residents struggling to come to terms with the loss of three lives.

The quiet village was turned into a scene of horror when a 30-year-old woman allegedly set her house on fire, leading to the deaths of two of her young children before reportedly taking her own life moments later.
The woman, identified as Veronica Anyango, is said to have ignited the fire inside her family home where several children were present. According to preliminary reports, she later walked out of the compound and allegedly hanged herself from a nearby tree.
Kayoo Sub-location Assistant Chief Alfred Mbara confirmed the incident, revealing that initial investigations point to a long-standing domestic dispute between Veronica and her husband, Charles Abiero. Reports indicate that tensions had been building in the family, allegedly due to disagreements surrounding the husband’s reported plans to marry a second wife.
Residents narrated how what appeared to be an ordinary afternoon quickly turned into a nightmare. Some neighbours noticed smoke rising from Veronica’s house but initially assumed she was preparing a meal.
“We thought she was cooking because smoke from kitchens is a normal sight here,” one resident recalled. “But after a while, the smoke became too much and we started sensing that something was terribly wrong.”
Panic erupted when screams of children trapped inside the burning house pierced through the village. Neighbours rushed to the scene and desperately attempted to save the young victims.
In a race against time, residents managed to rescue two children from the raging flames. Sadly, two others remained trapped inside as the fire spread rapidly through the house. By the time rescuers gained access, the children had already succumbed to the inferno.
As villagers battled the flames, another shocking discovery awaited them. Veronica’s body was found hanging from a tree near the compound, leaving residents devastated and searching for answers.
Many villagers described the incident as one of the most heartbreaking tragedies they had witnessed in recent years.
Police officers from Kendu Bay arrived at the scene and launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The bodies of Veronica and the two children were later moved to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations.
The tragedy has sparked conversations about mental health, family conflicts, and the devastating consequences unresolved domestic disputes can have on families.
