What began as a seemingly ordinary friendship on social media has ended in a life-altering prison sentence for a young woman whose future once appeared bright

A court in Nakuru has sentenced 20-year-old Mercy Mwende to 20 years behind bars after finding her guilty in a defilement case involving a Form Four student, a verdict that has triggered intense debate among Kenyans both online and offline.
Mwende, a native of Sotik in Bomet County, had only recently completed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in 2022, earning a C+ grade. Like many school leavers, she was looking forward to building her future and exploring opportunities beyond the classroom.
However, her life took an unexpected turn after she connected with a young man on Facebook shortly after completing her exams.
According to court records, the two communicated online for several weeks, developing a friendship that eventually led to plans for a physical meeting.
In early 2023, Mwende travelled to Elburgon in Nakuru County accompanied by a friend for a back-to-school themed photoshoot. It was during this trip that she met the young man in person for the first time.
After the photoshoot, transport difficulties disrupted their plans. Having missed the last available public service vehicle, the two women reportedly accepted an offer from the young man to spend the night at his family’s home.
The following morning, the young man left for work at a family business, leaving the visitors at the residence.
Hours later, events unfolded that would dramatically change Mwende’s life.
The family’s grandmother raised an alarm, accusing the visitors of engaging in inappropriate conduct with the young man’s younger brother, who was a Form Four student at the time.
Court proceedings heard that one of the women allegedly assaulted the elderly woman before escaping from the scene. Mwende, however, remained behind and was later arrested by police.
Medical examinations conducted on the student reportedly indicated that sexual contact had occurred, leading to criminal charges against the two women.
The case attracted significant public attention as it progressed through the courts. Both women initially faced serious charges, including gang rape and defilement.
At one point, efforts were reportedly made to resolve part of the dispute outside court, including compensation payments linked to the alleged assault on the grandmother. However, negotiations ultimately collapsed and the criminal proceedings continued.
When judgment was finally delivered, Mwende’s co-accused was acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence to sustain the charges against her.
Mwende, however, was convicted and handed a 20-year prison sentence.
The ruling has since generated heated reactions across social media platforms, with many Kenyans expressing differing views on the case, the evidence presented, and the severity of the punishment.
For Mwende and her family, the sentence marks a dramatic fall from the hopes that accompanied her successful completion of secondary school just a few years ago—a journey that began with a Facebook friendship and ended with a lengthy prison term.
