Woman, husband and son die in heartbreaking accident

Heartbreaking images have emerged of a Kilifi family whose lives were tragically cut short in a horrific road accident near Mtito Andei, Makueni County, leaving relatives, friends and an entire community struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

The devastating crash claimed the lives of 24 people, turning what should have been an ordinary journey back home into a nightmare for dozens of families. Among the victims were four members of the same extended family from Rabai Constituency in Kilifi County, a tragedy that has left their loved ones drowning in grief.

The deceased have been identified as Dr Patrick Mutsunga, his wife, Younitta Mutsunga, their son, Ndune Mutsunga, and Moses Mwadzuya, a child from the family of Patrick’s brother.

For the Mutsunga family, the accident was more than a tragic loss of life. It was the sudden disappearance of loved ones whose presence had been part of their daily lives, leaving behind painful memories and a void that words can hardly describe.

Relatives and residents of Mikomani and Mwamumba villages have been plunged into mourning following the deaths. The loss of Patrick, Younitta, their son and their young relative in a single accident has been particularly devastating, with family members and friends struggling to accept the reality of losing four loved ones at once.

Younitta’s death has also attracted attention because of her previous public service. She formerly served as the Ruruma Ward administrator, a role through which she was associated with local administration and community affairs.

Following news of the tragedy, local leaders and members of the community have sent messages of condolence to the bereaved family, expressing sympathy over the devastating loss and wishing relatives strength and courage during this difficult period.

The fatal accident occurred on the morning of Sunday, October 25, in the Kanga area near Mtito Andei along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

According to preliminary reports, the bus involved in the crash belonged to The Power of the Word Church International. It was reportedly transporting passengers back to the Coast after they had attended a funeral in Lugari, Kakamega County.

However, their journey ended in tragedy when the church bus collided with a lorry, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

Initial reports suggested that unsafe overtaking could have contributed to the collision. The bus was also reported to have been travelling overnight, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding the journey. Nevertheless, the exact cause of the accident was expected to be established through investigations by the relevant authorities.

The scale of the disaster became clearer as the hours passed, with the death toll rising from an initial 22 to 24 after more victims reportedly succumbed to their injuries. Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken for medical treatment.

The accident has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of road crashes, particularly along major highways where heavy commercial vehicles and passenger buses share busy routes.

For the people of Rabai, however, the tragedy is deeply personal. Four members of one extended family are gone, leaving relatives to confront the painful reality of preparing to bury loved ones who had travelled together but would never return home.

As condolence messages continue to pour in, the Mutsunga family faces a long and painful journey of mourning. The memories of Patrick, Younitta, Ndune and Moses will remain with those who knew and loved them.

Their deaths serve as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary journey can turn into a life-changing tragedy, leaving families and entire communities searching for answers while struggling to heal from an irreplaceable loss.
