A journey that began like any other turned into a heartbreaking tragedy at Biretwo Centre in Elgeyo Marakwet County after a woman lost her life while attempting to escape a moving vehicle whose brakes had reportedly failed completely.
The deceased, identified as Phylis Jeruto, was among several passengers travelling in the vehicle when disaster struck.
According to reports, the vehicle was in motion when the driver suddenly realised that the brakes were no longer responding. With the vehicle continuing to move and the driver unable to bring it to a controlled stop, panic reportedly swept through the passengers.
For Jeruto, the situation must have appeared terrifying.
With the vehicle still moving and apparently beyond the driver’s immediate control, she made a desperate decision. She reportedly jumped from the vehicle, seemingly believing that getting out was her best chance of surviving what could have turned into an even more devastating crash.
But the decision that may have been intended to save her life ended in tragedy.
Jeruto suffered serious injuries after hitting the ground. Despite the severity of the impact, she was unable to survive the injuries and died, turning an already frightening incident into a devastating loss for her family and those who knew her.
In a painful twist of fate, the passengers who remained inside the vehicle survived the incident.
