For many young people, the dream of working abroad is fueled by hopes of financial stability, career growth, and a better future. For Dishon Maina from Kirinyaga County, that dream turned into a nightmare he says he will never forget.

Maina, a resident of Kiamaciri in Kagio Town, has shared a harrowing account of how a journey he believed would transform his life allegedly landed him in the middle of one of the world’s deadliest conflicts—the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Maina, he left Kenya after receiving what appeared to be a promising opportunity in Russia. The offer, he says, came with assurances of good pay and the chance to improve his living standards. Like many young people struggling to secure well-paying jobs, he was eager to seize the opportunity and build a brighter future.
But what awaited him was far different from what he had imagined.
Maina claims that shortly after arriving in Russia, circumstances led him into military service, eventually placing him on the frontlines of the brutal conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
What followed, he says, were six months of fear, uncertainty, and unimaginable hardship.
He describes life in military camps as extremely difficult, with soldiers enduring harsh weather conditions, limited resources, and constant anxiety. According to him, rest was a rare luxury as troops remained on high alert day and night amid fears of attacks.
“Every day felt like a fight for survival,” Maina reportedly recalled.
The Kirinyaga man says the reality of war shattered every expectation he had before leaving Kenya. Instead of earning a comfortable income and improving his life, he found himself surrounded by destruction, danger, and death.
He claims that many foreign fighters who joined the conflict from different countries never returned home. Some, he says, were killed during fierce battles, while others suffered devastating injuries that permanently altered their lives.
The constant loss of comrades and the relentless threat of death reportedly took a heavy toll on his mental health.
As the months dragged on, Maina says he reached a point where he felt completely overwhelmed by fear and psychological exhaustion.
In one of the most shocking parts of his story, he alleges that he deliberately shot himself in the leg in a desperate attempt to escape the battlefield.
According to him, the decision was not made lightly. He says the trauma of war, coupled with the fear of being killed in combat, pushed him to take drastic action.
“I felt like I had no other way out,” he reportedly said.
While the injury helped remove him from active combat, Maina says it marked the beginning of a different struggle—coping with the emotional scars left by war.
Now back in Kenya, he says he is still haunted by painful memories from the conflict. Loud noises, disturbing images, and recollections of the battlefield continue to trouble him long after his return home.
He admits that adjusting to normal life has not been easy.
The experience has transformed him into a cautionary voice for young Kenyans eager to pursue opportunities abroad without thoroughly understanding the risks involved.
Maina is urging young people to exercise extreme caution when presented with offers that promise quick wealth or lucrative employment, especially those linked to military activities or conflict zones.
He warns that while such opportunities may appear attractive on paper, they can quickly become life-threatening situations with devastating consequences.
Today, Maina considers himself fortunate to have survived an ordeal that many others did not.
His story serves as a powerful reminder that not every opportunity abroad leads to success. Sometimes, behind promises of money and a better future lies a reality far more dangerous than anyone could imagine—a reality that, for Maina, unfolded on the battlefields of a foreign war thousands of kilometres away from home.
