Why the squad protecting president is very dangerous

Security expert George Musamali, when reached for comment, said before the president travels to a certain area, his security team usually does the risk and threat analysis.

“A threat, in general, we can say a motorcade can be blocked on the road like what happened in Lucky Summer or it might rain, we list all those threats then we do a risk analysis,” said Musamali. He said a Joint Operational Command (JOC), which involves all the stakeholders and agents that are tasked with the security of the president, is then formed and each group is given a specific task.

Let’s take a look at their formation

1. One on One Formation

This formation is typically employed in low threat areas with a low threat client. One bodyguard is assigned to safeguard the client, responsible for flank, point, tail, and close in protection.

2. Wedge Formation

Offering 360-degree protection, this formation takes the shape of a geometric wedge. Recce utilizes this tactic during evacuations, threats, or when moving the head of state through dense, low risk crowds.

3. Box Formation

Similar to the Wedge Formation, this provides 360-degree protection, particularly in high risk crowds. The President is positioned at the center while navigating through the crowds.

4. Diamond Formation

As the name suggests, this formation assumes the shape of a diamond, offering the client complete 360-degree protection. It can be employed in both loose and tight protective formations, either covertly or overtly.

Other formations include V shape and Arrowhead formations, wherein the President’s vehicle is positioned between control, support, and protection vehicles

Moreover, various personnel are involved in the operation, including bodyguards, route cars, sweepers, lead, backup, electronic countermeasure, and control support vehicles. Route cars scan ahead to inspect the highway and coordinate with police to manage traffic, while sweeper cars lead the motorcade. Backup entails regular police and National Intelligence Service personnel, while countermeasure vehicles jam communication and neutralize potential threats. Ambulances and media vehicles are also part of the support convoy
