University student’s decomposing body found inside grandmother house

What began as an ordinary visit to his grandmother’s home has ended in a heartbreaking mystery that has left a family searching for answers.

Police in Rachuonyo South, Homa Bay County, have launched investigations into the sudden and unexplained death of 24-year-old university student Ronny Okumu, whose decomposing body was discovered several days after he was last seen alive.

Ronny, a second-year student at Great Lakes University, had travelled to his grandmother’s home in Aramo Village, about six kilometres east of Kosele Police Station, on June 25. According to his grandmother, he asked for the keys to the house and settled in as though everything was normal.

The following morning, at around 6 a.m. on June 26, she saw him for what would become the last time.

Days passed without anyone realizing that tragedy had struck.

It was only after a strong, foul smell began coming from the house that Ronny’s grandmother became alarmed. Fearing something was terribly wrong, she checked the house—only to make a devastating discovery.

Ronny’s lifeless body was found seated on a sofa inside one of the bedrooms.

The scene immediately prompted a police response. Officers from Kosele Police Station, together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), arrived to examine the house and gather evidence.

Despite conducting a thorough search, investigators did not recover a suicide note or any obvious clues that could explain how the young university student died. With the body already in an advanced state of decomposition, many questions remain unanswered.

Ronny’s body was transferred to the Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

For now, police have classified the incident as a sudden death as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, another family in Kisii County has been thrown into mourning after a violent confrontation turned fatal.

Police have upgraded an assault case to murder following the death of 26-year-old Robinson Ong’au, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a stabbing incident.

According to investigators, Robinson was stabbed on the left side of his back during an altercation in the Menyinkwa area on June 27. He was rushed for treatment but later died from his injuries.

Police allege that the attack was carried out by a boda boda rider, also identified only as Ong’au, who fled the scene after the incident.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large, as detectives continue piecing together the circumstances that led to the fatal attack.

The two tragic incidents have once again highlighted the pain families endure when loved ones die suddenly or through violence, leaving behind unanswered questions and an overwhelming search for justice.
