Former Citizen TV news presenter Johnson Mwakazi came from a humble background but his golden voice earned him a place on the high table

The soft-spoken media personality’s breakthrough came after he was impressed as an actor at the Kenya National Theatre

His angelic voice earned him thousands of fans on social media and opened doors for him to voice commercial advertisements

Mwakazi was born and raised in Kibera slums in Nairobi city. He is the last born in a family of seven. According to Who Owns Kenya, his mother used to work as a house help in Woodley estate earning a meagre KSh 3,000 monthly.

The journalist’s father was reportedly a drunkard who failed to provide for his family and as a result, his mum was the sole breadwinner.

He first landed a job as a radio presenter at Hot 96, one of the stations under Royal Media Services owned by media mogul SK Macharia.

After working for two years as a radio presenter, he was promoted to Citizen TV power breakfast show host and news anchor. His angelic voice earned him thousands of fans on social media. It opened doors for him to voice commercial advertisements. His salary at Citizen TV and money from adverts enabled him to pursue a communications degree at Daystar University in 2008. He graduated from the institution in 2013.

After quitting Citizen TV in 2014, Mwakazi joined WTV under Fountain Media Group. He worked as the editorial director and CEO.

However, three years after its establishment, it collapsed, leaving the journalist disappointed. He left

According to his LinkedIn profile now,  Mwakazi is the director of Royal Voice International. The company produces adverts, and documentaries and offers voice-over services. It provides MC services, facilitates interactive sessions, and conferences. It further offers inspirational talks.
