A sombre mood has engulfed Mutitu North Sub-County in Kitui County after a 32-year-old secondary school teacher lost her life in circumstances that police believe point to a carefully planned murder.

The victim, Hellen Ngindu Matuvi, a teacher at Itiko Secondary School, had reportedly left home with her husband on a motorcycle, unaware that the journey would end in tragedy.
According to investigators, Hellen was travelling as a pillion passenger when the couple reached the Nguni Drift area. Police say the husband suddenly stopped the motorcycle by the roadside, and the two got off.
Witnesses told detectives that what followed was horrifying. The man allegedly attacked his wife with a sharp object, inflicting a fatal stab wound near her left ear. The injury caused massive bleeding, leaving the teacher fighting for her life.
Police suspect the husband then attempted to cover up the crime by staging a road accident. Detectives believe he pushed the motorcycle into the nearby drift to create the impression that the couple had been involved in a tragic crash.
Good Samaritans who responded to the scene rushed the injured teacher to Mutitu Mission Hospital, with the suspect accompanying her. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Hellen was pronounced dead on arrival after losing a significant amount of blood.
The husband also sought treatment at the same hospital, claiming he had been injured in the alleged accident. However, detectives say inconsistencies in his account, coupled with evidence gathered at the scene, prompted officers to arrest him as the prime suspect.
Hellen’s body was later moved to Mutitu Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death. Detectives have since launched comprehensive investigations to determine the motive behind the killing.
The shocking incident has left residents of Mutitu North and members of the teaching fraternity in disbelief, with many struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young educator whose life ended so tragically.
Separate Tragedy in Kwale
In a separate incident, grief has also struck a family in Diani, Kwale County, following the mysterious death of a 72-year-old tour driver.
The deceased, identified as Daniel Mkupe, had just returned home after a work assignment in Tsavo East National Park. According to his wife, he arrived complaining of severe stomach pain and requested her to buy pain-relieving medication.
After taking the medicine, Daniel went to bed hoping to recover. Sadly, he was later found unresponsive, leaving his family and neighbours in shock.
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death as they await a post-mortem examination to determine what caused the veteran tour driver’s sudden demise.
The two heartbreaking incidents have once again highlighted the pain and uncertainty that families endure as police work to uncover the truth behind sudden and suspicious deaths.
