A new chapter is unfolding in the life of Charlene Ruto as the President’s daughter prepares to take a significant step in her journey of love and family.
Charlene is set to hold her traditional Koito ceremony with Tanzanian entrepreneur and youth innovator Isaiah Yunke on Saturday at Intonna Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County, in what is expected to be a colourful gathering bringing together two families and prominent guests from Kenya and Tanzania.
The ceremony is more than a celebration of two people finding love. It is also a deeply rooted cultural occasion through which families formally come together and begin the journey towards marriage.
Among the distinguished guests expected to attend is Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, adding a regional dimension to an already highly anticipated celebration.
At the centre of the occasion will be Isaiah Yunke, a Tanzanian self-made entrepreneur who has built a reputation through his work in technology, education and youth empowerment.
Yunke is the founder of SomaApp, a platform that has reportedly helped connect more than 7,000 African students with scholarship opportunities abroad.
His journey has earned him recognition on the international stage.
In 2018, Yunke received the Queen’s Young Leaders Award from the late Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his technology-driven social impact and efforts to empower young people.
A year later, in 2019, he was named an Ashoka Fellow and was featured on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list, further cementing his reputation as one of the continent’s promising young changemakers.
His story of leadership, however, began long before those accolades.
At just 17 years old, Yunke reportedly made history by becoming the first African youth to present on child rights advocacy at the 2007 G8 Summit, placing him on an international platform at an exceptionally young age.
Today, the entrepreneur is preparing to step into another important chapter—this time away from business and technology and into family life.
For Charlene, the Koito ceremony marks a deeply meaningful cultural milestone. The traditional event will provide an opportunity for the two families to meet formally, celebrate their union and honour traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The presence of guests from Tanzania is also expected to underscore the longstanding cultural and social ties between the people of Kenya and Tanzania.
