Veteran Kenyan politician and democracy crusader Martha Karua is celebrated for her fearless fight for justice, constitutionalism, and good governance. But beyond her remarkable political career, she is also the proud mother of a daughter whose achievements have earned admiration far beyond Kenya’s borders.
For decades, Karua has been a towering figure in Kenyan politics. The former Gichugu Member of Parliament and Minister for Justice made history in 2013 when she became only the third woman in Kenya to vie for the presidency, following the footsteps of Charity Ngilu and Wangari Maathai. Her unwavering stance on accountability and democratic governance cemented her reputation as one of the country’s most respected political voices.
While much of her public life has unfolded in the spotlight, Karua has kept her family largely away from public attention. She was once married to an army major, and together they had two children. Although the marriage later ended, Karua has spoken about how the experience strengthened her resolve and resilience, qualities that have defined her political journey.
Today, one of her greatest sources of pride is her daughter, Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg, an internationally recognized development expert whose work is transforming lives across Africa.
Dr. Wanjiru currently serves as Managing Director for Africa at Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, where she oversees a vast network of more than 600 scientists working across 19 African countries. Her mission is to drive climate-smart agriculture, strengthen food systems, and ensure innovation benefits even the most vulnerable communities.
Her influence, however, extends far beyond agriculture.
A passionate advocate for women’s leadership and social transformation, Wanjiru founded Akili Dada, an organization that has empowered hundreds of young African women through mentorship, scholarships, and leadership development. She also established Black Women in Executive Leadership (B-WEL), a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices and opportunities of Black women in senior leadership positions.
Throughout her distinguished career, she has held influential roles at the Ford Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development initiative, where she championed gender equity, leadership development, and sustainable economic growth.
Born in Kenya, Dr. Wanjiru holds a Bachelor’s degree in Politics from Whitman College, as well as a Master’s and PhD in Political Science from University of Minnesota. She has also received an honorary doctorate in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to society.
Her extraordinary impact has earned global recognition. She has been named a White House Champion of Change, listed among the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine, recognized as a Ford Foundation Champion of Democracy, and celebrated among Kenya’s Top 40 Women Under 40.
As Martha Karua continues to leave an indelible mark on Kenya’s political landscape, her daughter’s accomplishments stand as a powerful testament to a family legacy built on leadership, courage, and service. Together, they represent two generations of Kenyan women breaking barriers, shaping policy, and inspiring change across Africa and beyond.
