Fresh and disturbing details have emerged surrounding the tragic death of Anita Mugweru, a 29-year-old accountant and devoted mother whose life was cut short in a shocking incident that has continued to grip the nation.

The young woman is alleged to have been killed by her husband, Captain Edwin Kaunga Muthomi of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), at their home in Upper Hill Estate, Nakuru County, in a case that has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about domestic violence.
According to testimony from a househelp who was inside the residence at the time, the evening began like any other. Anita had reportedly returned home from work and was looking forward to resting after a long day.
However, events took a tragic turn moments later.
The witness claims that Captain Muthomi attempted to engage Anita in a conversation immediately after she arrived. Anita allegedly requested a few moments to relax before discussing whatever matter was at hand. What seemed like a simple request is said to have triggered tension between the couple, quickly escalating into a heated confrontation.
As emotions flared, the argument reportedly shifted into mutual accusations of infidelity. The exchange became increasingly intense, with both parties allegedly questioning each other’s loyalty and commitment to the marr
iage.
In what are believed to have been her final moments, Anita reportedly urged her husband to seek a peaceful solution to their marital disagreements. According to the househelp, she suggested that both families convene a meeting to address the issues that had been straining their relationship.
Sadly, that meeting would never happen.
Moments later, the atmosphere inside the home reportedly changed dramatically. The househelp described a sudden silence that followed the heated argument before she noticed movement toward the kitchen area. Shortly afterward, Anita sustained severe injuries under circumstances that investigators are now examining.
She was rushed to hospital in a desperate effort to save her life, but medical personnel pronounced her dead shortly after arrival.
The witness further told investigators that Captain Muthomi later arrived at the hospital appearing confused and emotionally unstable. His condition reportedly raised concern among medical staff, who alerted police officers. He was subsequently taken into custody as investigations commenced.
The heartbreaking case has left family members devastated. Relatives revealed that Anita had previously expressed concerns about growing tension within her marriage and had been exploring ways to resolve the disputes peacefully. Plans for a family intervention meeting had reportedly been discussed but were never realized before tragedy struck.
What has made the case even more painful is that the alleged incident occurred in the presence of the couple’s four-year-old daughter, a detail that has deeply disturbed members of the public and child welfare advocates.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings continue at the Nakuru High Court, where questions surrounding the accused’s mental fitness have become a major issue.
Captain Muthomi is currently admitted at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, a process that has delayed his appearance in court. Lawyers representing Anita’s family have called for an independent mental assessment, arguing that transparency is critical to ensuring justice.
The victim’s legal team has also raised concerns about alleged intimidation of key witnesses and has urged authorities to provide adequate protection throughout the trial.
During recent court proceedings, Justice Patricia Gichohi directed all parties involved to file pending applications within 14 days. These include requests concerning witness protection, disclosure of case information, and legal objections raised by various parties.
The matter is scheduled for mention on July 14, 2026, as the court continues to examine issues relating to mental fitness, witness safety, and the criminal charges facing the accused.
As the investigation unfolds, Anita Mugweru’s family continues to seek answers and accountability. For many Kenyans, the case represents yet another painful reminder of how unresolved domestic conflicts can end in unimaginable tragedy, leaving families shattered and innocent children caught in the aftermath.
