A wave of grief has engulfed the student community at Meru University of Science and Technology following the tragic death of second-year student Vivian Ntinyari Gitonga, who was found dead in her room at Neema Apartments in California Estate, Meru.
Vivian, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Kiswahili and History, reportedly died after falling ill in the days leading up to the heartbreaking incident. She was said to have been staying alone, raising concerns about whether she had anyone nearby to assist her as her condition deteriorated.
What makes the tragedy particularly painful is the account of her mother, who reportedly spoke to her daughter over the phone a day before she was found dead. When subsequent calls went unanswered, the worried mother became increasingly concerned that something might be wrong.
Unable to establish contact with her daughter, she reportedly reached out to people in Meru and asked them to help locate Vivian and check on her well-being.
The search eventually brought together the landlord and several fellow students, who went to Neema Apartments hoping to find the young woman safe inside her room.
However, what they encountered only deepened their fears.
Upon arriving at the apartment, they reportedly noticed that the window was open and the lights were still on. Yet the door was locked from the inside, and their attempts to get Vivian to respond proved unsuccessful.
Growing increasingly concerned, those present reportedly forced the door open to establish what had happened.
Inside, they found Vivian unresponsive.
The discovery left those who had come to check on her devastated, as the hope of finding her alive gave way to the painful reality of a young life lost. News of her death has since spread sorrow among fellow students and members of the university community.
Medication found inside her room
According to the available accounts, medication was found on a table inside Vivian’s room. However, the presence of the medication alone does not establish what caused her death, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Police reportedly launched investigations to establish what happened before Vivian died and determine the exact cause of her death.
As investigations continue, her family, friends and fellow students are left grappling with the loss of a young woman whose future had seemingly held many possibilities.
Her death has also renewed conversations about the importance of maintaining close family relationships, particularly when young people leave home to pursue their education and begin living independently.
Psychologist urges parents to stay connected to their children
Psychologist Njeri Ndaru has urged parents to maintain open and supportive relationships with their children, emphasising the importance of regular communication and checking on their well-being.
Reflecting on Vivian’s case, Ndaru questioned whether a closer relationship and greater openness between parents and children could sometimes help identify problems before they escalate.
“Maybe her death would have been avoided by being open to her mum. I note that it seems the mum had been trying to reach her until the last day when she realised something was off. Not many parents have a good relationship with their kids and when such things happen, you wonder if it could have been avoided,” she said.
Her remarks highlight the importance of creating an environment in which young people feel comfortable sharing their struggles, whether related to their health, emotional well-being, academic pressure or other personal challenges.
For students living away from home, regular communication with family members, trusted friends and those around them can provide an important support network, particularly when they are unwell or experiencing difficulties.
However, the circumstances of Vivian’s death remain under investigation, and there is no confirmed evidence that a different family relationship or additional communication would have prevented the tragedy.
As the university community mourns the loss of Vivian Ntinyari Gitonga, many questions remain unanswered. Her loved ones will be hoping that investigations establish what happened and provide clarity about the final hours of her life.
For her mother, who reportedly tried to reach her daughter before the heartbreaking discovery, the loss is especially painful. What began as concern over unanswered phone calls ended in a devastating discovery that no parent ever wishes to face.
Vivian’s death is a sobering reminder of the importance of checking on loved ones, taking signs of illness seriously and ensuring that students living away from home have access to support when they need it most.
