A Kakamega family has been plunged into unimaginable grief after tragedy struck twice in the space of just a few hours, claiming the lives of a mother and the son she had just laid to rest.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded after the grieving mother, identified as Joan Bandi, gathered enough strength to attend her son’s funeral and bid him a final farewell.
Despite the overwhelming pain, Joan stood before mourners and delivered a speech at the burial ceremony, speaking about the child she had raised and loved. Those present described her as composed as she faced one of the most painful moments a parent could endure—the burial of her own child.
But shortly after delivering her final words, the situation took a devastating turn.
According to an account shared online by one of the mourners, Joan appeared to be overcome by emotion before suddenly collapsing.
“Yani after speech ya mtoto wako (Baba Dede) ukatulia tu kidogo, alafu shock ikakushika ukafaint tukidhani utaamka kumbe ni ivo ulikuwa unaenda,” the mourner wrote, describing the moment she collapsed.
Those around her reportedly believed she had simply fainted and would regain consciousness. But she never did.
The woman who had arrived at the graveside to say goodbye to her son had, tragically, taken her final breath herself.
The loss has left relatives, friends and mourners struggling to comprehend how a family could lose two loved ones in such a short span of time.
Adding an even more painful dimension to the tragedy was a message Joan had posted on Facebook before her death. She had shared a photograph of herself holding her son’s picture during the burial, accompanied by words that now read like an unintended farewell of her own.
“Today I say goodbye, but my heart knows this is not goodbye forever. Rest peacefully. May your soul rest in eternal peace. May God give me strength to carry this pain of losing you,” she wrote.
At the time, the words appeared to be a grieving mother’s final tribute to her son.
No one could have imagined that her plea for strength would become one of her last public messages.
