When many women discover that their husband has fallen in love with another woman, the first reaction may be anger, heartbreak or a decision to walk away.

But for Cecilia, a mother of five from Kisii, the revelation that her husband had another woman did not end her marriage. Instead, she made a decision that surprised many people—she welcomed the other woman into her family and agreed that they would all live under the same roof.
Cecilia says she had already noticed that something was changing in her husband, Takid Master, long before he finally opened up about his feelings for another woman.
Rather than allowing the situation to tear the family apart, she chose an unconventional path.
She accepted Mariam Nyambura into the family, and over time, the three adults developed a household arrangement that has continued to attract attention.
Cecilia and Mariam have separate bedrooms, while Takid moves between the two women within their Nairobi home.
What makes their story even more striking is that the two women are not simply sharing a house—they are also raising their children together.
Takid married Cecilia when he was just 17 years old, and the couple went on to have five children. Five years later, he married Mariam, a Muslim woman, with whom he has three children.
Today, the household consists of eight children, with Cecilia and Mariam playing a role in raising them under the same roof.
For Cecilia, the arrangement was not necessarily easy at the beginning.
Like any major change in a marriage, it required adjustment, patience and an understanding that their family would no longer resemble the traditional household many people are accustomed to.
But with time, she says, they found a way to make it work.
Interestingly, Cecilia also says having more adults in the household has brought an unexpected advantage: household responsibilities can be shared.
Cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children and other daily duties can be divided among them, making some aspects of family life more manageable.
Takid, who works as a martial arts instructor and fitness coach, says discipline and self-control have been important in maintaining peace within his unconventional family.
He says the family attends various events together and that people close to them are aware of their unique arrangement.
However, despite living what may appear to be a successful polygamous lifestyle, Takid has a warning for young people.
He cautions against looking at his family and assuming that polygamy is easy or that everyone can successfully replicate their experience.
According to him, having multiple wives comes with its own set of responsibilities, emotional challenges and financial demands.
He therefore advises people to understand what they are getting into and only choose a family structure they can genuinely manage.
For Cecilia and Mariam, however, their unusual journey has become their everyday reality.
They maintain their individual spaces, share responsibilities and work together to raise their eight children.
Their story may challenge conventional ideas about marriage and family, but for this Nairobi household, it is a way of life they have gradually learned to navigate—one day, one challenge and one family responsibility at a time.
