What was supposed to be a peaceful retirement has turned into a baffling nightmare for a 68-year-old former military officer from Ziwa, Uasin Gishu County, after he discovered that official records indicated he had died nearly three years ago.

David Muigei, a retired soldier who left military service more than a decade ago, is struggling to comprehend how a death certificate bearing his name was allegedly issued in 2023 despite the fact that he is alive and well.
The shocking discovery came after Muigei noticed something unusual about his prized Toyota Harrier, a vehicle he had purchased to enjoy during his retirement years. To his disbelief, ownership of the car had been transferred to another person without his knowledge or consent.
Determined to uncover the truth, the retired officer launched investigations into the mysterious transfer. What he discovered left him speechless.
According to documents he obtained, he had supposedly died on October 12, 2023, at a hospital in Eldoret.
Standing before village elders who had gathered to hear his case, Muigei held up the controversial document in disbelief.
“These people used the death certificate to transfer ownership of my vehicle. As you can see, I am standing here alive, yet according to this certificate, I died on October 12, 2023. It even states where I allegedly died. I do not know what illness supposedly killed me, but everything is written there,” he said.
The revelation sent shockwaves through the local community. Elders who have known Muigei for years expressed disbelief that such a document could have been processed while the man was still alive and actively interacting with members of the community.
One elder said they had spoken with Muigei during the very period he was allegedly declared dead, making the existence of the certificate even more puzzling.
“This is something I have never witnessed in my entire life. We were with him during that time, and now we are seeing documents claiming he had already died,” the elder remarked.
Adding another twist to the mystery, the hospital named in the death certificate distanced itself from the matter. Officials reportedly stated that they have no records showing Muigei was ever admitted to the facility or died there.
The distraught retiree now believes there may have been a deliberate scheme to deprive him of his property.
“I have never heard of such a thing since I was born. Children working together with their mother to harm me and take my property, yet they are educated people holding good jobs and wealth,” he lamented.
As questions continue to mount, residents of Ziwa are demanding thorough investigations into how a death certificate could allegedly be issued for a living person and subsequently used in transactions involving property ownership.
For Muigei, the ordeal remains deeply disturbing. A man who spent years serving his country is now fighting an unbelievable battle — proving that he is alive after official documents declared him dead.
