The Recce Squad is one of Kenya\u2019s most feared and highly trained police tactical units. The elite team operates under the General Service Unit (GSU) and is mainly deployed in dangerous missions such as counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue missions, VIP protection, and high-risk security assignments. Over the years, the unit has gained national recognition for responding to attacks such as the Westgate Mall attack and the Garissa University attack.<\/p>\n

Because of the dangerous nature of their work, many Kenyans have always been curious about how much Recce Squad officers earn and the job groups they fall under within the police service structure.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the average salary of a Recce Squad officer ranges between KSh 35,000 and KSh 60,000 per month depending on rank, experience, and assignments. Junior officers and constables usually earn lower salaries, while senior officers and commanders receive significantly higher pay.<\/p>\n

Most Recce Squad officers begin their careers as ordinary police or GSU officers before undergoing specialized paramilitary and anti-terror training. Once recruited into the elite unit, they start receiving additional risk allowances and operational benefits due to the dangerous missions they handle.<\/p>\n

Reports indicate that an average Recce Squad commando earns around KSh 36,000 basic salary before allowances are added. Officers attached to presidential security or special anti-terror operations can receive extra allowances ranging from KSh 10,000 to KSh 25,000 monthly.<\/p>\n

Recce Squad Salary by Job Groups<\/h3>\n

Like other government officers in Kenya, police officers are placed under different job groups determined by rank, education, and years of service. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) provides salary guidelines for public servants.<\/p>\n

According to SRC salary structures, public servants in Job Group J can earn over KSh 31,000 basic salary while those in Job Group M may earn above KSh 49,000 before allowances.<\/p>\n

The highest-paid officers within the unit are usually commanders and officers attached to sensitive government security operations. Some highly experienced Recce officers who serve in intelligence-based operations reportedly earn much more because of special duty allowances.<\/p>\n

Despite their elite status, many Kenyans have often argued that Recce officers deserve better salaries because of the life-threatening situations they face. Some leaked reports and payslips previously shared online suggested that certain officers earned less than what many citizens expected for such risky work.<\/p>\n
