For more than a decade, Lillian Wanjala lived a life shrouded in secrets. Two different men had married her, both had paid dowry, and neither knew about the other’s existence for over 10 years.

Speaking in an emotional interview with Edmac Studios, Lillian opened up about the turbulent journey that shaped her life—from a troubled childhood and single motherhood to a complicated love life that eventually caught up with her.
A Childhood Marked by Instability
Lillian’s early years were anything but easy. She recalls being shuffled from one home to another, living with her grandmothers, mother, father, and uncle at different times. The constant movement left her feeling unwanted and deprived of stability.
Despite her strong desire to pursue an education, her dreams were cut short when her uncle refused to pay her school fees. Forced to abandon formal schooling, she enrolled in a dressmaking course and successfully completed it, hoping to build a better future for herself.
Abandoned While Pregnant
As a young woman, Lillian became pregnant with her first child. However, the baby’s father disappeared, leaving her to face the challenges of motherhood alone.
“I fell pregnant with my first child, and the man ran away,” she recalled.
While struggling to raise her child, a neighbour introduced her to a man from Teso. The relationship blossomed into marriage, and together they welcomed six children.
For a time, life seemed promising. But as the years passed, cracks began to emerge in the relationship.
“I was the one paying rent and hustling to keep the family afloat. My children knew that their mother was working hard to provide,” she said.
According to Lillian, her husband became increasingly absent and at one point stayed away from home for nearly a year, leaving her with the burden of supporting the family alone.
A New Beginning in Nakuru
Determined to improve her family’s circumstances, Lillian secured a job at a Somali-owned eatery in Nakuru.
It was there that her life took another dramatic turn.
While working in Nakuru, she met a Tanzanian Muslim man who expressed interest in marrying her. Initially, Lillian kept her family situation a secret.
“I didn’t tell him immediately that I had children,” she admitted.
The man, who already had a wife and three children, told her he was looking for a woman willing to relocate with him to Tanzania.
The two eventually grew close and started a relationship that would change the course of Lillian’s life.
Carrying the Weight of Two Families
As the years went by, Lillian found herself juggling enormous responsibilities. She supported her children in Nakuru, helped her parents financially, and maintained her relationship with her Tanzanian husband.
The pressure became overwhelming.
She also invested heavily in building a home for her children. However, tensions soon arose within the family.
According to Lillian, her Tanzanian husband purchased land and registered it in his own name before construction began. As the house project progressed, disagreements with relatives intensified.
When the house reached the lintel stage, her sister confronted her angrily, accusing her of neglecting other family responsibilities, including helping a niece attend college.
“My sister was upset because I couldn’t take my niece to college. She and my Tanzanian husband never got along,” Lillian explained.
The Secret Finally Unravels
The situation took a dramatic turn when her sister allegedly contacted the Tanzanian husband and revealed details about the home Lillian was building and the children she was supporting.
The revelation sparked a major conflict.
“She told him about the house I was paying for and how I was educating my children,” Lillian said.
Feeling betrayed and convinced that Lillian had hidden crucial details from him, the Tanzanian husband confronted her.
“He came and chased me away, saying I was only after his money,” she recalled.
The confrontation marked the beginning of the collapse of a secret she had managed to keep hidden for more than a decade—a double life involving two husbands, two families, and years of sacrifices made in an attempt to hold everything together.
Today, Lillian’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles many women endure in silence, balancing family obligations, financial hardship, and complex relationships while trying to create a better future for their children.
