A heartbreaking story has emerged of Lydia Omumea, a woman from Kibra, Nairobi, who is struggling to rebuild her life after her marriage reportedly collapsed under painful circumstances that left her caring for their sick son alone.

What began as a marriage built on hope and the promise of a better future allegedly turned into a nightmare when Lydia’s husband became romantically involved with the househelp she had hired to help care for their family.
Today, the woman who once ran a shoe business and shared a home with her husband is reportedly surviving by washing clothes and utensils for neighbours as she fights to provide for her son, who is battling blood cancer.
Behind her current struggles lies a painful journey marked by childhood loss, financial hardship, betrayal and the responsibility of raising a seriously ill child without the support she once depended on.
Lydia’s Painful Journey Began in Childhood
According to accounts shared with news agencies, Lydia’s difficulties began when she was still a young girl.
She lost both her parents while pursuing her education, a devastating experience that forced her to abandon school in Grade 8 before sitting her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
With her future uncertain, she moved in with her grandmother as her sister travelled to Nairobi in search of employment.
Life was far from easy, and opportunities to earn money were scarce.
“My sister would sometimes tell me there was no work,” Lydia recalled, describing the difficult circumstances that pushed her to look for ways to support herself.
Determined to escape poverty, she eventually secured a job at a hotel. It was there that she met a man who was three years older than her.
Their relationship developed, and after introducing him to her grandmother and sister, the two decided to get married in 2015.
For Lydia, the marriage represented a fresh start and an opportunity to build the stable family life she had long desired.
Marriage, Business and the Arrival of Their First Child
After their wedding, the couple settled in Donholm, Nairobi, where her husband worked as a car salesman.
In what appeared to be a promising beginning, her husband helped her establish a shoe shop, giving her an opportunity to earn an income instead of depending entirely on him.
The couple continued building their life together, and things appeared manageable even after the birth of their first child.
However, their happiness was shaken when their son was diagnosed with blood cancer at around five years old.
The diagnosis brought new challenges for the family. Their son required regular hospital visits, and caring for him became an increasingly demanding responsibility.
Lydia had to find a way to balance running her shoe business with taking care of her ailing child.
It was during this difficult period that she decided to hire a househelp.
Little did she know that the decision she made to make life easier for her family would allegedly mark the beginning of one of the most painful chapters of her marriage.
How the Househelp Allegedly Became Involved With Her Husband
Lydia said she hired a Ugandan woman on the recommendation of a friend, trusting her to help with household responsibilities and care for the child while she attended to her business.
For approximately two years, Lydia said she did not notice anything that made her suspect the woman was interested in her husband.
“At first, she was not malicious, and she did not show any signs that she was,” she recalled.
However, according to Lydia, the relationship between the two women gradually deteriorated as the househelp allegedly became increasingly defiant and stopped following instructions.
One of the problems Lydia reportedly faced was the househelp’s failure to collect her son from school, forcing her to intervene despite her busy schedule.
At some point, Lydia returned home earlier than expected to address the issue and allegedly found the househelp with her husband.
She said she initially dismissed what she had seen, hoping it was not a sign of a deeper problem.
But the situation reportedly escalated.
On another occasion, Lydia said she returned home to find the two together in the bedroom she shared with her husband.
For a woman who had trusted her husband and brought the househelp into her home to support the family, the discovery was deeply painful.
Instead of seeing the situation resolved, Lydia alleged that her position in her own marriage continued to deteriorate.
Forced Out of Her Own Bedroom
According to Lydia’s account, the alleged affair eventually changed the atmosphere in their home completely.
She claimed that her husband stopped providing money for their son’s medical treatment, leaving her increasingly worried about how she would meet the child’s needs.
In an even more painful turn of events, Lydia alleged that she was forced out of the bedroom she had shared with her husband so that the househelp could sleep there in her place.
The woman she had hired to help her manage the home had allegedly become the person occupying the space she once shared with her husband.
Lydia said she continued performing household chores, including cooking meals and washing bedsheets, despite the humiliation she says she experienced.
“I was the one cooking and picking up my son from school, while she would sit around all day doing her nails and disrespecting me,” she said.
Her account paints a picture of a woman who felt increasingly powerless in her own home, even as she struggled to care for a child whose health required urgent and consistent attention.
Yet, despite the alleged betrayal, Lydia continued trying to keep the family together.
The Day She Returned Home to Find Everything Gone
The situation reportedly reached a breaking point in 2025.
Lydia said she returned home one day only to discover that the house had been locked.
A key had reportedly been left with a neighbour, while her husband was nowhere to be found.
The househelp had also packed her belongings and left.
What followed, according to Lydia, was a painful silence. Her husband allegedly stopped answering her calls and eventually blocked her number, cutting off communication when she needed support the most.
Attempts to seek assistance from his relatives reportedly yielded no meaningful help.
Suddenly, Lydia found herself facing the responsibility of caring for her seriously ill son without the support she had previously relied on.
The financial pressure became overwhelming.
With rent arrears accumulating, medical expenses mounting and her shoe business no longer able to sustain her, she began selling household items to raise money for her son’s treatment.
One by one, the belongings she had acquired while building her marriage became a means of survival.
Eventually, her sister stepped in and helped move her and the child from Donholm to Kibra, where Lydia began trying to rebuild her life from scratch.
Washing Clothes to Keep Her Son Alive
Today, Lydia reportedly earns a living by washing clothes and utensils for neighbours.
The work is demanding, and the money she earns is limited, but she continues doing whatever she can to provide for her son.
Her greatest concern is not what she has lost, but what would happen to her child if she were no longer around to care for him.
In a heartbreaking reflection on her situation, Lydia expressed fear about who would take care of her son if she died.
Her words reveal the emotional burden she carries as a mother trying to remain strong while facing financial hardship and the uncertainty surrounding her child’s health.
For Lydia, every day has become a struggle to find money for basic needs while ensuring that her son receives the care he requires.
Her story is a painful reminder of the challenges families can face when a serious illness collides with financial difficulties and the breakdown of a marriage.
While the full circumstances surrounding the reported separation remain based on Lydia’s account, her experience highlights the vulnerability of a parent left to shoulder the demands of caring for a seriously ill child without the support they once expected from a partner.
Despite everything she says she has endured, Lydia continues to fight for her son’s future.
She may have lost her marriage, her business and the home she once shared with her husband, but she has not given up on the child who depends on her.
For now, washing clothes and utensils is how she survives. Every task she undertakes represents another attempt to secure food, meet medical expenses and give her son a chance at life.
As Lydia struggles to rebuild her life in Kibra, her greatest hope remains finding a way to care for her son and give him the future he deserves.
