What began as an ordinary evening of football and friendship ended in a horrifying tragedy that has left two families shattered and a community demanding answers.

Three young men—29-year-old Kennedy Muthungu, his younger brother Stanley Muthungu, 22, and their close friend Charles Mutiso, 25—lost their lives in a brutal mob attack in Machakos Town under circumstances that are now the subject of intense investigations.
According to relatives and local leaders, the three friends were walking home on the night of May 31 after watching a football match when disaster struck. Reports indicate that Charles was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by a local businessman. The impact is said to have killed him on the spot, turning what had been a joyful evening into a nightmare.
Witness accounts suggest that Kennedy and Stanley were devastated by the sudden death of their friend and confronted the driver, allegedly attempting to prevent him from leaving the scene before police could arrive. Their intention, family members claim, was to seek accountability and ensure proper legal procedures were followed.
However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
It is alleged that the driver raised an alarm, claiming the two brothers were trying to steal his vehicle. Within moments, boda boda riders and members of the public reportedly rushed to the scene. What followed was a shocking act of mob justice that has stunned residents across Machakos County.
The crowd allegedly descended on the young men, attacking them before setting them ablaze in a violent incident that left no chance of survival.
A postmortem examination later revealed that the victims died from severe burn injuries and suffocation caused by smoke inhalation, painting a grim picture of their final moments.
As investigations continue, the victims’ families have strongly rejected early claims suggesting the trio had been involved in an attempted car theft. They insist that the young men were innocent and had merely sought justice for their friend after the fatal accident.
The tragedy is made even more heartbreaking by the promising futures that were lost.
Charles Mutiso had recently graduated from KCA University and had secured employment as a web developer, a milestone his family had proudly celebrated. Kennedy Muthungu was building a career in the insurance industry, while his younger brother Stanley was a student at Machakos University and was looking forward to graduating later this year.
Their deaths have left families struggling to comprehend how three ambitious young men could lose their lives in such a brutal manner within minutes.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident, and a suspect linked to the case has already appeared before the Machakos Law Courts, where he was detained pending further investigations.
As funeral preparations begin, grieving relatives are calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to conduct a thorough and impartial probe. They want everyone involved in the incident brought to justice and are urging authorities to establish exactly what happened on that tragic night.
For the families, the pain goes beyond the loss of their loved ones. They are now seeking the truth, accountability, and justice for three young lives that were cut short in a tragedy that has left an entire community in mourning.
