Born and raised in Webuye, Bungoma County, Vanessa experienced a difficult childhood. She was brought up by her mother, who worked tirelessly to provide for her. However, tragedy struck in 2009 when Vanessa was only 12 years old after her mother passed away, leaving her life forever changed.
Following the death of her parents, Vanessa found a new home under the care of her uncle, veteran trade union leader Francis Atwoli. Despite being associated with one of Kenya’s most recognizable public figures, Vanessa was determined to create her own identity and succeed through hard work rather than family connections.
Her entrepreneurial spirit emerged at an early age. At just 17, immediately after completing high school, she established her own fashion company, V-Design, later known as Nekesa Queens Ltd. Armed with passion, creativity, and a dream of transforming Kenya’s fashion industry, she began designing unique outfits that quickly attracted a growing clientele.
Vanessa’s breakthrough came in 2017 when she entered the Blaze Be Your Own Boss competition. Competing against hundreds of ambitious young entrepreneurs, her innovative business idea impressed the judges and earned her the coveted top prize. She walked away with millions of shillings in funding, alongside invaluable mentorship, financial guidance, and business support that helped accelerate the growth of her company.
The victory transformed her life overnight. What had started as a small fashion venture soon blossomed into a thriving enterprise, establishing Vanessa as one of Kenya’s rising entrepreneurs.
Her achievements did not go unnoticed. At just 24 years old, Vanessa was ranked 14th among Kenya’s Top 40 Women Under 40, a prestigious recognition celebrating young women making significant contributions in business and leadership.
Beyond business, Vanessa also invested in education. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from Mount Kenya University, proving that academic excellence and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand.
