Nearly nine months after their daughter disappeared without a trace, a grieving family in Makueni County is preparing to lay her to rest while still searching for the answers that have eluded them since the day she vanished.

The family of Everlyne Mumbe, a 16-year-old Form Two student at Kasunguni Secondary School in Matulani who was promoted to form 3, says the pain has never faded. Instead, it has grown heavier with every passing day as they continue to wait for justice in a case that remains unsolved.
Everlyne was reported missing on November 3, 2025, after leaving her home to buy vegetables at a nearby market. When she failed to return, her family launched a frantic search, hoping she had simply been delayed. Hours turned into days, and days into weeks, but there was no sign of the teenager.
Their hopes were shattered in December when her body was discovered near a bush not far from the family’s home, turning what had been a desperate search into a heartbreaking tragedy.
For Everlyne’s mother, Wanza, every school day is a painful reminder of the daughter she lost.
“Whenever I see girls her age walking to school, my heart breaks,” she said, struggling to hold back tears. The sight of students in school uniforms reminds her of the dreams her daughter never had the chance to fulfill.
Her father, Boniface Mukusya, said the discovery of Everlyne’s body only deepened the family’s anguish. According to him, they were informed that several of her internal organs, including the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, were missing when her body was found.
An autopsy reportedly concluded that Everlyne died due to a lack of oxygen. However, despite the disturbing circumstances surrounding her death, the investigation has yet to produce any breakthroughs.
Nearly nine months later, no suspects have been identified, no arrests have been made, and the family says they continue to live with unanswered questions and unbearable grief.
As they prepare to finally give their daughter a dignified burial, the family says the ceremony will provide a chance to say goodbye, but it will not bring the closure they desperately seek.
They continue to appeal to investigators to intensify efforts and ensure those responsible are identified and held accountable.
For Everlyne’s loved ones, justice remains the only missing piece. Until that day comes, they say their daughter’s memory will continue to haunt them—not only because of how she died, but because those behind her death remain unknown.
As they gather to lay the teenager to rest nearly nine months after her tragic death, the family hopes that renewed attention to the case will help uncover the truth and finally deliver the justice Everlyne deserves.
