Fresh details have emerged surrounding the death of Nairobi lawyer Christopher Mwenda, with investigators reportedly pointing to an alleged overdose of a powerful anaesthetic administered to him during a medical procedure at Meridian Equator Hospital in South C, Nairobi.

The 32-year-old High Court advocate died on December 18, 2025, after visiting the hospital for what was expected to be a routine endoscopy, a medical procedure used to examine the digestive tract. However, what began as an ordinary hospital visit reportedly ended in tragedy, leaving his family searching for answers about the circumstances that led to his sudden death.
According to the reported findings of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the drug at the centre of the probe is propofol, a powerful anaesthetic commonly used to sedate patients during certain medical procedures. The drug requires careful administration and close monitoring because it can affect breathing, blood pressure and heart function.
Investigators reportedly established that Mwenda’s condition deteriorated shortly after the anaesthetic was administered. His blood pressure allegedly dropped, his heart rate changed, and he began experiencing breathing difficulties.
Medical personnel reportedly attempted to stabilise him as his condition worsened, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The young lawyer eventually died, turning what should have been a routine medical appointment into a devastating loss for his family.
The doctor involved in the procedure, identified in reports as Kevin Murimi, reportedly told investigators that Mwenda developed complications after receiving the anaesthetic. However, questions have continued to emerge over whether the medication was administered appropriately and whether the patient received the necessary monitoring.
Government pathologist Johansen Oduor, who reportedly examined Mwenda’s body alongside a pathologist representing the hospital, is said to have raised concerns about whether the lawyer’s underlying medical condition could have explained his death.
According to the reported findings, the condition was not considered sufficiently serious to account for the fatal outcome, with an alleged propofol overdose instead identified as a possible explanation for the complications that led to his death.
The postmortem examination also reportedly raised questions about the medical documentation relating to the endoscopy. Investigators are said to suspect that some of the recorded results may have been fabricated, adding another layer of concern to a case that has attracted attention over possible medical negligence.
These allegations remain subject to investigation, and the full circumstances surrounding the lawyer’s death will need to be established through the relevant investigative and legal processes.
Following the incident, the DCI launched investigations to determine what happened inside the hospital, including the circumstances under which the anaesthetic was administered and the medical care provided after Mwenda developed complications.
For his family, however, the investigation represents a search for more than medical explanations. They want to understand how a seemingly routine procedure ended in the death of a young professional whose life was cut short at just 32 years old.
The family is reportedly preparing to pursue a civil lawsuit against the doctor and the hospital over suspected medical negligence. Such legal action could provide an opportunity for the allegations to be examined and for responsibility, if established, to be determined.
Meridian Equator Hospital has confirmed Mwenda’s death but reportedly declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by the media.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council is expected to investigate the hospital’s handling of the case, including the circumstances surrounding the procedure and the concerns raised by the reported findings.
As investigations continue, the central questions remain: Was the anaesthetic administered in the appropriate dose? Were the required safety measures followed? And could the tragedy have been prevented?
For Mwenda’s family, the answers may be crucial in their pursuit of justice and accountability. Until the investigations are concluded and the allegations are tested through the appropriate processes, the circumstances surrounding the young lawyer’s death remain a matter of serious concern.
