What began as a desperate search filled with hope has ended in heartbreak for a Nakuru County family after the body of a man who vanished more than a month ago was discovered deep inside the vast Mau Forest Complex.

The tragic discovery has left relatives mourning and searching for answers about what happened to Paul Cheruiyot Rop, a tea farmer and father of four whose mysterious disappearance baffled family members and residents alike.
Rop, who lived in the Mulango area of Arorwet Village in Kuresoi Constituency, was last seen on April 26, 2026, when he quietly left his home. In a detail that has continued to puzzle his loved ones, he departed without carrying his mobile phone — something family members initially did not view as unusual because of the cold weather conditions at the time.
For weeks, relatives held onto hope that he would return home safely.
Instead, their worst fears were confirmed when a decomposing body was found hidden deep within the Mau Forest and positively identified as that of the missing farmer.
“We have found the body of our brother in the Mau Forest and positively identified it. It is a sad twist to the search that has lasted more than a month,” said his brother, Dr. Wilson Kipsang Rop.
As investigators pieced together his final movements, a troubling picture emerged.
Reports indicate that Rop boarded a matatu heading toward Silibwet Trading Centre in Bomet County. However, before reaching his destination, he reportedly alighted at a lonely footpath leading into the Kubaranyat section of the Mau Forest Complex — a remote area bordering Nakuru, Bomet and Narok counties.
Passengers who were in the vehicle are said to have questioned why he was heading alone into the dense forest. According to accounts gathered during investigations, he offered no response before disappearing into the wilderness.
Back home, his family launched an exhaustive search that stretched across multiple counties.
His widow, Margaret Rop, recalled the emotional rollercoaster that followed his disappearance. The family followed countless leads, many of which turned out to be false.
Some individuals allegedly contacted the family claiming they had seen him in Kilgoris and Suswa in Narok County. In some instances, the callers reportedly demanded money in exchange for information, giving relatives false hope while complicating the search effort.
“We searched police stations, hospitals, mortuaries and trading centres without success,” Margaret said.
The discovery of his body has now shifted attention to determining exactly how he died.
A senior officer at Kiptagich Police Station confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that a postmortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
The remains have been transferred to Tenwek Hospital Mortuary as detectives work to unravel the mystery surrounding his final days.
Originally from Bosto Village in Konoin Constituency, Bomet County, Rop had built his life in Kuresoi South, where neighbours describe him as a quiet and reserved man who largely kept to himself.
As his family prepares to lay him to rest, many questions remain unanswered, turning a month-long search into a painful mystery that continues to haunt those he left behind.
